I don't think this is what was originally planned, but I am glad they are finally doing something.

The Israeli water machinery that our country really needs is the desalinization stuff for California, although these machines sound like a good idea in theory as well.

^Yeah. The Cali water issues are crazy. Just was listening to this NPR story on it today:

How Almonds Became A Scapegoat For California's Drought : The Salt : NPR

Basically, every drop of water is called for over there. 80% of the water goes towards agricultural uses. I don't even know how much water goes to keeping up all the golf courses and perfectly manicured yards of the Beverly Hills estates, but here's a good article about that:

In Record Drought, California Golf Course Ethically Keeps Greens Green : NPR

Tying it back to Dayton and development, those kind of issues makes it easy to see why our water is a big asset around here.

Yes, it is. I've heard from some how we should be marketing our water resources to other states/countries for a few years. After doing a little research, I realized how right they were. We should be sending people to these places and running advertisements (if we aren't already).

Hey, that's a great idea Threadmaster and Master Driesen. Let's extend it to ridiculous proportions as is my wont:

It's not just CA, but AZ, NV, UT, CO, and NM. All six of those states draw water from the Colorado river based on historical flows during the wettest time that tree-ring data can provide going back for tens of thousands of years.

The manure hasn't really hitted the rotating air moving device yet. -- Some of the reservoirs in CA are down to about one year of supply. Maybe. They could go back to "normal" rain/snowfall next year and keep doing so for another ten and never fill them back up. Things could get interesting just this year.

N. CA has a lot of marijuana growing where legal and illegal growers are both illegally damaging stream beds and taking water they have no rights to.

Some people are going with 'Astroturf' and/or spraying green die on dead lawns. People pour rocks on their property and instead of just planting cactus and calling it good, they put in irrigation systems that use 2x the water used in the house.

In the Western forums there are lots of people who really believe that taps should be stuck in Lake Michigan and water pumped out there so they can use water like it rained a lot there. They're serious. It's not going to happen, but lotsa people really think that would be a reasonable idea.

Phoenix and Tucson used to have actual rivers that flowed through their downtowns all year long. The L.A. River is just a concrete drainage sewer. It will get more and more interesting. In Phoenix, the two big lakes that supply some of the city's water ( Mead & Powell ) are way more than 50% empty with no hope of going anywhere but down.

Albuquerque actually siphons water out of the Colorado River drainage area and over the continental divide to augment the Rio Grande. The RG river still flows 12 months, but not everywhere. It goes dry off-and-on now so people can flood irrigate stuff upriver. Even better; L.A. and PHX can demand ABQ stop pumping once the two lakes run dry ( soon ).

Denver is in an area that anyone from Dayton would consider a desert. It has some native grass, but there is pretty much no water around to supply the city with enough. They tap water going TO the Colorado before it even gets there and siphon it over the mountains.

=-=-=-=- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The whole Midwest could make brochures that should show lots of pictures of green lawns and say "this is real grass." We should post ideas for brochures and then drop them from drones on their dying and desiccated lawns and gardens.

Another brochure idea might be pictures of rivers here and say "this is what a river looks like that hasn't been tapped dry for lawns that belong here ( where "here" is Dayton, or wherever ... ).

There are things called "server farms" ( in short, they are used to deliver the internet to the rest of the world ). They require lots and lots of computers that generate lots and lots of heat and need to be cooled using jillions of gallons of water. In Ohio, it would literally be possible to store ice in the winter and use it to help cool these things. I know it seems old fashioned, but would really be "green." Lots of old downtown locations all over the Midwest have water resources right next door.

The weather is dandy there, but I say hit 'em when they are down. "Closing your factory because there isn't enough water? We let 1,000x the water you need ( every year ) just run down the Miami River ( every day ) because we just have that much draining off our green farmland. Don't move your factory to China. Send it here to Ohio."

Oh yeah; Washington should never be allowed to help pay for any desalination plants. Not one cent. ( Hit 'em while they are down. )

You know, it really is what is best for Dayton and for the country. We need to capitalize on our resources and the country needs to conserve water in the West.
