I am originally from NJ/PA about 2 hours away. I'm military and have orders to Dover AFB. I'll be looking to move into a place at the beginning of April. I'd like to stay under the 1,000 range for rent. I'm single and have no children, but I do have a small dog.

I'd just like to know what apartments and neighborhoods are nicest within 30 mins or less of the base.

I haven't decided if I'd like to rent a house or an apartment yet, so I want to know about both. I previously owned my own home, so I'm a little worried about going back to apartment living. I'm concerned with apartment living due to noise and also don't want my car dinged up in a parking lot. I'm in my mid 30's and also prefer to be around a more mature or relaxed crowd, so I really don't want to deal with neighbors upstairs partying.

Are there any nice, quiet apartments where I won't have much to worry about, but are still close enough for me to get to work or shopping areas within about 30 minutes AND are under the 1,000 dollar a month range?

I've seen some old posts about Village of Westover Apartments, Woodmill, Planters Run Apartments, and East Lake Gardens, are these nice?

And one recent suggestion: Silver Mill Apartments

Also would like to know what neighborhoods are nice...what neighborhoods to avoid? General areas to look near? Just off of certain roads, etc.

I'd like to hear from people who live in the area about where I might be best suited to live.

Sorry for the wordy post, guess I'm always a little long-winded, but any help would be much appreciated!

hi - i just moved to delaware in november - i moved to magnolia which is only minutes away from dover - some people have a thing about mobile homes but mine is less than 10 years old and very spacious - as a matter of fact its nicer than my condo in connecticut - they do allow pets here - i believe you may have 2 - if your not down on mobile homes i believe they rent some out here - the name of the complex is barkers landing in magnolia delaware - i have no idea what the rent is but im quite sure its well below 1,000.00 a month - what i like best is i cant hear my neighbors and they cant hear me which was a problem in my condo even though it was a townhouse - oh i forgot all the mobile homes here are less than 10 years old and most are double wide although there are a few single wide - there are also 2 family or 4 family homes they rent out in magnolia - if you would like the phone numbers i drive past a few i can copy down the numbers for you

I looked at it online and I have to admit I was surprised to see it was nicer than I had expected! I'm still not sure though, I think I'll have to drive through and see in person, but it's worth the look. And if Magnolia's close I'll definitely check it out. It's probably a little early to check availability on anything just yet, I'm just trying to familiarize myself with areas and have a clear idea of what's available in my price range before I get there and start running all over looking at places.

I have a lot of co-workers who rent in Cannon Mills and the Village of Blue Hen. We work on the base, so I know the commute from those areas is pretty simple.

Magnolia is close by, takes me 10 minutes to get from my house in Magnolia to the main gate.
Good Luck

The Town of Magnolia has some single family detached housing for rent, some under $1,000/month. Not all are older homes, some almost new. Also, the Town of Camden has some nice rental properties. I know plenty of apartment units, but usually, single family detached homes are more popular. Pick up a Dover Post and they have rental ads in there.

I hope you find something soon. I must say, locals really love our military population here. They contribute to the communities so much, and the ones we've met have been outstanding individuals. We have town events, and every year a group from the base volunteers to help us, out of the goodness of their hearts! Great people!

Thanks for the advice and tips. I'm still on the fence over whether to rent a house or apartment, but at least I'm getting a general idea of what areas to look. I've been using the AHRN.com website, but I suppose I'm getting too ahead of myself since I won't be there for another month or so! I guess I'm just really looking forward to moving to the area! I will check out the Women of Dover AFB facebook page as well!

PANZERATTACK41:

I just got here today and am in billeting on base for now. I kinda cruised around a little bit today trying to find a few houses that I had previously found online. I decided to try to find a house, and not an apartment. I got in a little late and only had a chance to see a few houses so far, but I found 2 or 3 okay ones, although they were a little above the price range I was hoping for. (looking for something around 1,000 or less a month) Most of the houses I looked at were in Dover and were are all a bit too close to busy roads or shopping areas for my liking. I did see a house in Lakeshore Village and that area was nice. I liked the Felton area as well. I'll be heading out again tomorrow and the rest of the week until I find a house. Hoping to find something I like ASAP!

Are you looking for something in the same price range? Something for just yourself or a family? If you're looking for the same thing as me, I can definitely try to remember to shoot you an update on here about what I've found.
