Here's some of our local trivia you won't find in a book, or anywhere else.

When taking a shower, NEVER run really hot water on your head.

This piece of advice comes from our learned observation. On the farm, every 3 months all family members, all ages, participated in "chicken day". We all helped catch the chickens, and the men/boys wrung their necks. On a tree stump, we filled a large kettle with boiling water. To remove the chicken feathers, we dunked the chickens in the kettle a couple of times. Most feathers fell off, and the ones left were easy to pluck.

Locals don't run really hot water on their heads.

I don't think I should tell you about "pig day", and what we learned from that.

Surprisingly, with all the newcomers saturating the state, there are still enough locals to carry on some old traditions.

For instance, Muskrat & Stewed Tomatoes is still a Jan-Feb-March tradition for us. Not too often is it openly advertised anymore, but this sign I took a photo of in Smyrna today, proudly displays a favorite Delaware dish.

A real "Delawarean" is locally described as
"One indulging in muskrat at least once a year, at Kitty Budd's"
That separates the men from the boys.

This is where I will choose to part from my dear friend RDLR's culinary traditions. Now as far as Peach Fuzzies are concerned, count me in. Ox Sandwich on Return Day? I'm with you. Apple Scrapple? You betcha! But the mus'rat and I will not be at the same dinner table at the same time. I don't even care for stewed tomatoes that much. If that dish truly separates the men from the boys, just consider me one of the boys.

A former co-worker used to bring muskrat heads to work for his lunch. He sat alone eating his meal.

As many know already, once our home is sold we are relo'ing to Delaware and I must say this thread is a wonderful idea.
I read the above and immediately figured return day was December 26th!! Imagine my surprise when I read up on Return day. sounds like fun...but I will be skipping the OX and Muskrat.

Great info thread thank you...I can see I need an education!!!

I saw a sign advertising muskrat down in Sussex yesterday. I think I will leave that to the real Delawareans. Everything else I have had has been great, though. Had the crabcakes at Countrie Eatery - excellent.

Oh, Oh......
More local customs.......Crabcakes......Go to Sambo's in Leipsic, that's where to find fresh crabcakes....made after the crab pots are emptied. They are closed for the winter and will open soon. But honestly.....Sambo's is the place for crabcakes in Kent County. JP's on the Wharf in Bowers Beach is good, too....but that's just my opinion. I like "from the bay to the pot", nothing frozen and not off the Sysco truck. And, for dancing on the dock of the bay, JP's is the local hangout! An old fishing boat has been converted to a bar, and it's out on the deck. 25-30 feet from the boat bar, watch the boats dock and see the fishermen carry off their harvest. Live bands, crabs, shrimp, and suds! The South Bowers Beach people swim across the lagoon to North Bowers to join the fun. Nothing "stuffy" about us! We're not even scary, although, we've noticed some NY visitors run to their cars and speed away.

All those beach towns look great! I liked Bethany Beach - stopped there yesterday. Nice Main St., good places to get food and ice cream in season, an outdoor concert area right on the boardwalk. Looked like heaven to me! Hope you have a great summer down here. My town in CT had been having outdoor movies on the beach on weekends, but the beach was destroyed by Irene and the newly elected Mayor has no plans to fix it right now. It is padlocked shut, so I think no movies this year for us.

Gotta try Sambo's sometime. Sounds like a great way to spend a summer evening. Whenever we're downstate, I try to find a place that serves chicken and (slippery) dumplings. Smiths on Rt 13 in Greenwood serves them one day a week. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Yes, check Sambo's out! Newspapers on the table, and watch the fishing boats dock from the back windows.

Slippery dumplins -
Hall's in the Town of Wyoming, Wednesdays

Not sure about the days for the following:
Rudy's in the southbound lane in Harrington before you hit Rt. 14
Stargate in the northbound lane in Harrington (diagonally from Rudy's)
Peggy's in the northbound lane Greenwood (almost diagonally from Smith's)
Wagon Wheel in Smyrna in the northbound lane
Plenty more serve them, so we can have them every day of the week!
