You guys are so helpful! Thanks! If we lived in Highlands (my husband really wants to live in the city; he's just a city guy) maybe we could send our kids to private school? Anyone know anything about Colorado Academy, which looks a reasonable drive? We'd like a great education for our kids, but really want to avoid them growing up with a disproportionate sense of entitlement (read: snobs). I had a little fear about that from the CA website, but I may just be projecting my own private high school experience!!

If schools are a main concern - find one or two that you'd like and focus your housing search in those areas.

You won't need $700k to buy a house in the Highlands. I have a better idea: buy a $300k house in the city, and buy your parents a $700k house in Summit County.

Check out Hilltop. Close to downtown, beautiful older homes (and some scrapes) and close to the 6th Ave. Parkway and lots of parks. Lots of kids! One (if not THE) best public elementary schools in Denver and loads of great private schools within walking distance. Walking/biking distance to the shopping/dining district of Cherry Creek North.
North of 8th Ave you'll find Mayfair. Beautiful smaller homes built in the 30's and 40's. in the $300-$400's. Close, but not TOO close for the parents!
