We just bought a house in Denver and are considering signing up for Angie's List since we have a few significant projects we need to get started on (chimney work, exterior drainage), and can foresee more in the future (the joys of home ownership!) Wondering if anyone has used Angie's List and whether it has enough useful recommendations for the Denver metro area to justify the price.

I also saw that they also offer medical recommendations for an additional cost, and I'd be interested to hear if anyone has tried that service and found it worthwhile (or not). Thanks!

Default Yelp

Yelp is free.
Yes, it it more focused on restaurants, but many contractors are rated.

Tom Martino's Troubleshooter list (exclusive to Denver) is similar to Angie's List, but it's free. I used Angie's List when we lived in MN, and I really wasn't that impressed. Just google it - "Tom Martino Troubleshooters" & you should find the website...I've found several contractors that way.

Also use the Denver BBB website, and look for contractors with an A+ rating.

Depending on what area of Denver you live in, I can recommend a good FP doctor. Just ask on here too...you'll get lots of recommendations. I've survived 5 corporate relocations and I know what it's like trying to find people you trust to do work for you.

You are kidding, right?

Tom Martino is strictly "pay to play" for the businesses. On the other hand: "Companies can't pay to be on Angie's List"

This Tom Martino?

Sheridan: I too take issue with Martino. We had a really bad experience with someone who he recommended. A plumber who was charging 300% over what it should be. After that I dug around and found what davebarnes said, the companies pay Martino to be on his list, whereas Angie's List they cannot do that.

With that said, finding a contractor is like finding a needle in a haystack. It's pure torture for me. I can't bring myself to pay for Angie's List, and so I do search the web, search here, search Yelp. Sometimes I go though Service Magic. I have friends who swear by it, but I've also read negative things about it. In any case - I find you really just have to do your homework! Lately my husband and I have resorted to the big box stores for installs - Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, etc. At least that way you have somewhere to go if things go wrong. It seems it'd be much harder to go after a solo contractor. Just my 2 cents.

I was about to point out the bankruptcy. The guy went South in a hurry.

So maybe Service Magic isn't such a bad recommendation, no?

MOD: Please delete my other post as I just now figured out the multi-post function. DOH!

I dunno.... very shady all along - given any biz could pay to be on his "list". Trust me, the guy has a long history of a shady rep.

So maybe Service Magic is not such a bad recommendation. Glad to hear it went well with you. I've used them twice now, successfully.

I wasn't aware he had filed for bankruptcy.

Nevertheless, I had good experiences with the two contractors I used off of his list when we first moved to Colorado.
