Hello!

My wife has taken a job at the Medical Center in Aurora and we're relocating to the area in January. We have friends in Louisville which seems nice and we've quickly driven through Golden, Westminster, and parts of Denver. We plan to rent for a couple of years. We're looking for great schools, safe community, and ideally something closer to Boulder than Denver. That said we'd like to minimize her commute as much as possible -- but we REALLY like the idea of being closer or in the mountains. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

-- Paul

What are her working hours? If she needs to commute during rush hour, I don't recommend living anywhere along the US36 corridor - it will be very unpleasant and long commute. Look at Stapleton. From what I've heard there are some nice parts of Aurora as well (sorry, no personal experience). Farther from the mountains, but then again - you can still see them .
Unless you are planning to go to the mountains during the week, it really doesn't matter if you drive an hour or an hour and a half, in my mind. But commuting 1.5 hours every day, when you can commute 0.5 hour is silly.

Aurora is on the wrong side of Denver for being close to the mountains. As OhioToCo said above, it's going to be tough to live in the Louisville area. Stapleton is a good place. Also, look at Cherry Creek High school south of Denver near the Tech Center. This area has great schools, is very safe, and has a decent spread in home prices.

I live in Louisville and am a huge cheerleader for the city, but I agree with the above. My daughter lived at home with us and commuted to the Health Science Center for a while. It was a long drive. She got an apt. in Aurora rather quickly. Stick to the east side.

Aurora is definitely not Boulder area. For a reasonable commute you will definitely be in the Denver area which is kind of close to mountains but not as close as some think. Also, be ready for crowded trailheads and heavy mountain highway traffic Friday through Sunday and worse on holiday weekends.

Stapleton if you like new homes, Park Hill if you like older established neighborhoods.
