No, there is no plan for that. Light rail plans are within the Denver metro area.

Sort of. There is an effort called Front Range Commuter Rail / Rocky Mountain Rail Authority, a council of regional governments tasked with looking at intercity transit. Their plans are for a inter-city commuter rail called Ranger Express along the I-70 and I-25 corridors. However, unlike the rail expansion by RTD in the Denver metro area, this is in the very early planning stages and is unfunded at present. While I wouldn't put it in the "pipe dream" category, it's far from a sure thing at present. Even if it does come to pass, don't expect any actual service for at least a decade from the time it gets funded.

I know this doesn't answer your question but there is something called FREX which is a bus with free high speed internet on it. It goes between Colorado Springs and Denver. I wish I could ride it to work but I don't work along its route. Think of all the City Data posting time you'd have commuting to work.
Frex - FrontRange Express

Also Denver lightrail is controlled by RTD which only serves the Denver area. If there were to be a new rail line between the two there would need to be a whole new transit authority created to oversee it. I seem to recall plans for high speed commuter rail proposed from ft. collins to pueblo but I haven't heard any news on it in some time.

There is talk about it but the finances are in the way.
I think I-70 is the big push right now from Denver Metro to the mountain communities. But yes, there has been talk about rail from Denver to the Springs while there is also talk (The Denver Post and The Gazelle - er Gazette just reported on it) for a high speed highway from Ft. Collins to Pueblo.
Honestly though, I think it would be a bad investment. We are so dependent on our cars it's amazing that Frex can turn a buck...IIRC it was shut down for a while. Seriously though, if I were to work in Denver, I would rather drive my own ride or just move up there.

I think that the highway you are talking about has either been cancelled or on hold. I seem to remember that there was huge opposition to it from land owners over the whole emminant domain thing.

Does this strike anyone else as tremendously short-sighted and mis-guided? It seems to me that our limited resources should go toward creating a mass transit system that serves residents, not tourists.

I didn't write it, our lawmaker's are writing it.
Apparently the drive over the divide is the problem here. Don't you get the newspaper?
285 and 24 to 9 are not the way to solve it...let's break the bank and build a...yeah, if you have a solution I am all for it.
