The cost of consumer tracking goes way beyond the individual view and things like targeted coupons.

But then, people thought nothing of loading what was basically a detailed personal journal into Facebook, too. It was "private"; what harm could there ever be?

Everything online I have is fake. Nothing is tied to my real name. The only one that knows my real identity is
Comcast. But still the Facebook profile for a name other than mine could be a household member. So maybe Comcast doesn’t know. All my rewards cards profiles are fake as well. Safeway isn’t tracking me! And the best tip I have for restaurant reward cards.... have a birthday every month. You then get freebies or deals every month cause you know it’s your birthday.

That you think this makes a difference, or that hiding your head under the sofa makes you invisible, is what's really sad about the whole situation.

That is, the people who are completely aware of what's going on but think they can participate anonymously.

You can't. But never mind, that's another thread.

I’m not naive and take other precautions I won’t discuss on an open forum. My point here was you shouldn’t give away your identity for marketing purposes.

Go ahead and discuss away. They aren't nearly as tricky, effective, or secret as you think.

Tracking likes to have an exact identity, but it's not necessary for most of its goals. If you think all the tracking and data mining is to make certain ads show up on your browser (or any equivalent) your little kitty-rump is sticking out from under the pillow.

That's fair.

Y'all ought to just hug your tree, go shop at Trader Joe's Sprouts Wild Oats, pay less and get better food.

While the parent company is apparently still Albertsons, for whatever reason, they chose to keep the Safeway branding and rename the few Albertsons stores here "Safeway."

Fun facts: (specific to my area) the Safeway on Buckley just south of Mississippi was originally an Albertsons as was the Safeway on Gun Club just north of Smoky Hill.
When those stores were re-branded, the (really nice) Safeway on Smoky Hill was closed, although the gas station remains.
