That is a big reason why property values are so low in many rural counties. A lot of the properties are abandoned and not being lived in. This leads to a general decrease in overall values along with the fact that very few new properties are ever built.

LOL, define sarcasm.

Also Des Moines grew by 11% from 2000 to 2006 (the metro).

At that rate it's looking for an 18-20% growth rate this decade. Or up to 90,000 people.

How is this "slow"?

Meaning Des Moines will be a city of 300,000 people in 2 years?

Yeah right.

And who said growing this fast was a good thing? I would hate to live in cities like Dallas, Atlanta, or LA that have the population density of some North East cities but no way to get people to work besides clogged freeways. Uuuugh!

You got that wrong... First it was the Germans, then Irish, then Italians, then Blacks, now the Illegals.

No, the metro. Going from 481,000 to 535,000 (2000-2006), and expected to be around 570,000 in 2010.

No ones commented on this forum in a while....

I don't think that the only reason that Chicago isn't loosing is because of illegal immigrants. I mean they're constantly building new skyscrapers in downtown, and illegal immigrants can't afford $750,000 condos.

And Des Moines is growing pretty fast, but how come they haven't built a new building in downtown for like 10 years?

Also, Kansas and Iowa I think are really similar. They’re both mid-western and usually seen as agricultural states, but their population is going up because of the growth of their cities. In Iowa it’s Des Moines, and in Kansas it’s Kansas City and Wichita.

A lot of buildings have been built in DT DM in the last 10 years. Most of them are mid-rises. The tallest is the 13 story Davis Brown Tower.
