I grow up in Taylor in the late 90's and moved away. I am considering move back there given the home prices and being familiar with the area. Question is how is the city now? Is the crime rate high? What about the school system? The property taxes seem to be high for such low home prices. Give me your thoughts please.

Crime seems to be localized to certain areas and even specific apartment buidlings. It is certainly higher than many surrounding communities, but I would not think of Taylor as an unsafe area, just a bit rougher than most.

Schools are pretty bad. I have heard good things about their special ed programs.

They have a wodnerful park (Heritage Park). They also have a very nice sports (hockey) arena. I am not sure how Taylor can change much. It is still smallish older houses, lots of strip mall type places and a golf course. It is neither nice nor awful. It will nevr be nice, and not too likely to become awful.

Taylor tends to be a bit lower end than much of downriver. It seems to draw the people with lots of tattoos, piercings, big hair, - you know, the bowling alley types. That does nto make it awful, but it is more like LIncoln Park than like woodhaven.

Does that help?

That helps!! Thanks, I have my eye on two more cities, Canton or Farmington Hills. Canton's home prices seem to be quite high but the schools are awesome. Farmington Hills seems to have all of thos factors are well. I plan to visit both in the coming weeks. My family lives in Westland and Dearborn Heights which I do not care for two much.

I drove a little through Taylor this January, the north side seemed pretty normal. The south (more rural) end was trashy though.

Canton has good schools IF you are in the Plymouth Canton School District.

What can you afford?

Northville, Plymouth and Novi all have execellent schools. South Lyon is right behind them. On the next level, you have Livonia, Brighton, Milford. I think that Romulus is one to avoid.

If you want downriver area, Grosse Ile has the best schools. Trenton, and Woodhaven have good schools. I do not know about Southgate schools, but I expect that they will be good. Taylor, Wyandotte and Allen Park not so good schools. Lincoln Park, Ecorse and River Rouge - stay away. Gibraltar not so great. Flatrock and Rockport (Rockwood?) I am not sure about. Dearborn has good and not so good schools. I do no think that they have any excellent schools. (Except maybe the school at Greenfield Villiage, but I do not know if that is a good school or not. I just sounds really neat).

North Oakland County has some really good schools, but that is pretty distant from the area you are looking at (Taylor and Canton).

I do nto now a lot about Farmington Hills. I think some of there kids may go to Walled lake, which has very good schools.

I moved to Canton from out of State last year and love it...as long as you stay away from Ford Road on the weekend. It doesn't take long to figure out the good North-South routes to minimize the congestion. It is very central to where I have to go. Like somebody said, keep an eye on the school district the house is listed in. When I was buying there was a noticeable difference in price upwards if you stayed in the Plymouth-Canton district.

Plymouth-Canton schools have had their share of negative press. Farmington is probably the best of the cities under consideration.
Taylor seems to be continuing its downward sprial. Two of my brothers are in Taylor-tucky--one near the Telegraph and Wick area the other near Goddard and Telegraph. The house near Wick has been burgularized several times this year (12 month period) and my brother near Goddard seems to have few worries about crime?
The southwest and northwest cornes are still the more "risky" sides of the city.

the places in taylor that are bad is the far southwest side south of eureka, north of pennsylvania, west of beech daly and east of Inkster, I Wouldnt go to taylor schools cause theres a part of taylor schools that goes into the south end of Inkster which is high crime.
