This is a great place: lakes, bike trails, good schools, nice homes. Undervalued, too.

We are leaving in June of 08...My husband works at Henry Ford Hosp. in Detroit. We have a 1500 sq. foot apartment in Shelby Twp....It is very safe here...Maybe you should rent for a year before you plunk some money into buying something...He has a 45 min. commute on a good day (into the city)...but like I said, its cheap, quite and safe were we are...

Just leaving Livonia in November to move to a historic neighborhood in Detroit I personally think the best suburbs are Livonia, Westland, Rochester Hills, Sterling Heights, and Royal Oak, and Troy, but mostly for the shopping, the schools, and homes there, but I would no longer recommend Warren because som neighborhoods are starting to seem like the ghetto, which is why my mother-inlaw move out of their into Grosse Pointe Park, but she can afford it. Some brick neighborhoods in Detroit are nice too like Palmer Woods, Brush Park, and Indian Village but I simply won't dare send my child to a Detroit Public School.

Note that Southfield (which also surrounds Lathrup Village) has some bad parts and borders Detroit and that it suffered from "white flight" in the mid-'eighties (you do the math and figure out what that means). If you can afford it, your best bets are probably Novi, Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield (the Lakes Country), Commerce Township, Northville, Plymouth, Canton, Troy, Rochester Hills, and maybe Livonia. Look in those areas. Personally, I recommend the northwestern suburbs and the Lakes Country, but I'm a little biased towards this region.

For those who are new to the area, Pontiac is like a little piece of Detroit that's just out-of-place in Oakland County. Ironically, it's also the county seat.

Firstly, 46205 doesn't exist in Detroit. 48205 is the area. I assume that's a typo. Secondly, you could have made a new thread for your question instead of bumping a really old one. Thirdly, that area is really risky and I can't say for certain that that'd be a worthwhile investment. Crime is really hectic over there.
