Whenever people propose shrinking the size of the city I am left baffled as to what their plans are for the resultant unincorporated, ungoverned hinterland that would now exist.

It would make Mad Max look like the South of France.

But then people explained to me that what would happen is, governance of that area would then fall on the county.

Yeah, I'm sure Wayne Country would love that!

A bailout would be a PR disaster for Detroit. If you think people hate Detroit now, imagine if the Feds gave money out to Detroit whether justified or not. There would be endless indignation. Detroit really needs a new urban plan to be implemented at the same time as this bankruptcy. The City could do a good PR campaign about really changing Detroit once and for all. In my opinion, a law should be passed that requires every house and/or building owner in the city to maintain it. If not, you get fined. If you do not pay the fine, the city takes control. The city should embark in a mass razing of the city...not just empty building but entire swaths...sections of the city. The entire area within the boulevard needs to be razed except the Motown museum, Eastern Market, Woodbridge, Corktown, Downtown, Midtown, and New Center...Clear it out and make downtown and motown an oasis surrounded by sculptured trees/orchards...

Wyane County is already dong this. Only it is 29 hours to avoid Obamacare. But not cops and firefighters. Other types of employees. Where have cops and firefighters evr been hel to part time to avoid paying benefits?

If you are into conspiracies regarding Detroit's problems...

Cui bono? - who benefits? - from the failures of Detroit and any plan that might "save" the city?

Default Bad PR is the last thing you should worry about

Most people have already formed their opinions about Detroit -- mostly bad. Violent crime, poverty, bad schools, corruption, political incompetence and now, bankruptcy, tend to do that. Going forward, it's more important to keep the cops on the streets and fireman on the job.

Detroit shouldn't reject financial assistance if offered. It's going to need all the help it can get.

Maybe the Chaldeans and other Middle Easterners can rescue Detroit.

Many of the private businesses in the city are owned and run by Chaldeans and other Middle Easterners. East Dearborn at one time was abandoned and it has been reborn with cafes, shops, and restaurants..some open 24 hours a day. Maybe the Middle Eastern comminity can act as a liasion with Abu Dhabi or Dubai to invest money in the city.

Mouldy Old Schmo,

"who benefits? - from the failures of Detroit"

As an example -

Hmm.... Hart Plaza used to host the "Downtown Hoedown". Then the "Downtown Hoedown" was moved to a parking lot. Any revenue the city generated from the event being in Hart Plaza was given to the owner of the parking lot.

The operators of Detroit consistently work against the best interest of the city. The ‘leaders’ are either really stupid or in on it.

I went to Hart Plaza for the fireworks. That place is dumpier and dumpier. Weeds are growing in the steps. Weeds growing in the steps of an urban park. What a joke.
