That was a good size rat in the beginning of the video; feed a family of three.
Even the rat seemed to be desperate to get out of the West side .

I can understand how gunfire might easily get confused with legitimate fireworks but this was gunfire for sure. I can tell by now. In addition, the same happened the year before in this video where the people firing the guns were actually visibly shooting. Using firearms as fireworks is very concerning and generally is not an indication a city is improving. The same happened in Cabrini Green in Chicago, a very high crime area. This really should be addressed before Detroit can thrive again.

It has nothing to do with how well a place is doing. It was far worse in ritzy Orange County California than it is here. It is just a thing that people do on new Year's eve all over the country. It does not mean a thing other than sometimes people do dumb things. Frankly shooting a shotgun into the air is pretty harmless. a 9 mm pistol is not likely to be harmful either. Larger guns or high velocity rifles are a bit more of a risk, but it is extremely rare that anything happens. Fireworks are more prevalent and equally or more dangerous. Shooting an arrow into the air is more dangerous. Maybe more prudent to run around worrying about who might be shooting arrows or crossbows up into the air (or an atlatl dart). Those are going to do more damage when they come back down.

I don't know where you hail from but waving around guns and aimlessly shooting in the sky is not considered normal behavior where I'm from . Just think of stray bullets and the risk of shooting a bystander when waving around a handgun or even an automatic rifle. Some of the shots in the video sounded like coming from automatic weapons.

I know the people displaying this kind of behavior at Cabrini Green were not exactly your ordinary, god fearing, hard working, law abiding citizens .

A real and lasting comeback?.. Maybe when there's a massive influx of gay men to start gentrifying the place.
But until then, I think not.

2. f the sound of gunfire scares you, then Michigan is a bad place for you. We get a lot of gunfire where we live, espcially during duck and goose season. Shotguns make the loudest noise of any common gun, so it really sounds like a war zone (or at least what i expect a war zone sounds like - never been in one).

3. Every city in the country has bad/run down/neglected/decaying industrial areas. Being the former manufacturing capitol of the world, Detroit has lots of them. You cna also hnt around and find incredibly nice areas in Detroit. Propaganda videos can convey whatever they are looking for. They can make it look insanely awful or incredibly nice. They can even make it look like people are flying in outer space and shooting lasers at each other. Remarkably, having seen how incredibly realistic they can make things that are not what they appear, people still take videos at face value. It is pretty silly. Anyone who has been at a significant event and then seen the media version of it is aware that even news videos are phonied up. Random videos on U-tube posted for shock value have zero credibility. this may or may not be in Detroit. It may or may not be from this year (one thing to look for is modern jeep Rubicon and gladiators. If there are none, it is probably not current they are everywhere). I cannot make out where this is filmed. There are part of Detroit that definitely look similar (excpt the mid-rise buildings int he background). It is shot in several different locations. The Beginning looks somewhat like Del Ray which is being torn down for the New Gordie Howe Bridge and customs plaza, is really desolate. There are not make people who live there.

4. These ruin porn "Look How Shockingly Awful Detroit Is" videos were massively popular about ten years ago. This could be a left over, or it could be someone who cannot let go of the past. Yes there are still awful parts of Detroit, just like every other city, but the core of Detroit is awesome. Considerably better than most cities. That is why the popularity of those shock/ruin porn videos died out. People came to visit and discovered the City is really nice. They go to the places shown tin the video and find them restored. Or they find they are in parts of the city where you simply should not go (every city has such parts). Eventually they realize Detroit is just like every other city int he US, except a bit nicer than most and they get bored and go home and stop watching the shock videos.

5. It is funny to me that the people who are stuck in the past are generally people fomr the suburbs who have not been to Detroit for decades or people who moved away 10 or more years ago and cannot accept that it changes. to accpet this they woudl have to accept the missed a golden opportunity

I grew up in Detroit back and went to college in Detroit. Do not remember gun fire on NYE except after I returned from 'nam in the 70s and went to college. Before then, firecrackers.

I moved out of the area after college, but did come back and do a three year stretch from 2005-2008, living in Rochester Hills. However, I did the daily drive to downtown Detroit (Howard/Cass area) and used to walk around downtown all the time. My opinion (and that is all it is) is Detroit will never recover to what it was. Not possible.

And although I would agree many cities have the same problems, most DO NOT.

While almost all cities have areas you might want to avoid; some cities and I include Detroit, have a few areas you might like the greater majority of the city you want to avoid.

Being honest, I have not been there since the end of 2008 when I retired and moved to UT; possibly, something drastic might have happened to Detroit. But talking with friends who still live in the burbs, it hasn't.

And it is not just Detroit, Chicago, LA, SF, Louisville, St. Louis, Kansas City and some others are headed in the same direction of are considerably worse. But there are more cities that are no where as bad as Detroit.

What are you locals thinking and planning for your home city??
You need to market in a University and headquarter international business there to get started to bring people there.
It could happen.

Downtown is great but what do you as a Canadian from Windsor think of parts like the west side? Did you watch the video about the west side I posted? Did you ever venture there?

I’ve been to many sides of the city over the years, some are great, some are desolate and empty, and some are downright scary, not unlike many legacy cities in the States.

Most people I know go to certain neighbourhoods in Detroit for specific reasons, most aren’t just driving around in the hood looking for trouble.

There are lots of city neighbourhoods that are now seeing new investment and residents, it’s a slow and steady process and will take time to see the end results, but it is happening.
