I have been hearing a lot about detroits racism in many posts so I just had one question. I am a white male who has always been interested in
Detroit, but from what I hear would I be accepted in Detroit?

OWEGO: I am sorry that you have read posts on Detroit Racism. I have lived in Detroit all my life and I will tell you that it is highly unlikely that if you moved to Detroit you will suffer any prejudice, or racist attitudes. I have noticed a growing amount of Asians, Latinos, Mexicans, Arabs, and biracial people living in the Detroit proper. I am currently residing in the Downtown area in a High Rise apartment complex. Over have of the residents in this complex are White. Downtown Detroit has many new Condos, Lofts, Apartments, and Homes. If you like Hockey, Baseball, Concerts, Plays, great Clubs, and Casinos, you will like Downtown Detroit. There are, and have been certain areas/cities outside of Detroit that have been consider Racist. I suggest if you want a area near Detroit to move to Farmington Hills, Westland, Royal Oak, Southfield, Sterling Heights, Warren, or Canton.

So many people are moving out, I do not believe that you will be ostracized. There are a lot of whites moving back to many of the elegant or historic neighborhoods (but not enough). Also many of the historic neighborhoods and the Downtown/Midtown area have PLENTY of white folks that live there. Also there are a good number of whites that still live in Southwest Detroit and the horrific neighborhood of Brightmoor.

Now, if you moved to an 98 percent black neighborhood that is decline (which is what most of the city is), then the folks might look at you kind of strange...but besides the occasional "go back to the suburbs" remark by some jerk, you will not be recieved coldly.

How is it for an African American family moving to the burbs like Troy or Sterling Heights? I have checked some of the school websites and see a few minorities.

Actually I don't think that you would encounter much hostility there, especially Troy, and i'm not even a Troy fan. i could name a couple places where there could be uneasiness but it would offend some here.

Oh please--
Twenty five years ago, if you had a white face, you couldn't drive down to your old neighborhood in SW Detroit, and slow down without getting mobbed. What makes you think it is any better today?
