Hi our yellow lab is 2 1/2 y.o and for the past month she has been acting lame in her hind left quarter and seems to be getting progressivley worse.
She has an appt with the Vet this w/e. I mentioned to him about a month ago and he thought maybe some arthritis and to give her some glucosamine w/o choindroiton (sp?). I am all worried that we are going to get bad news. She is such a good girl. Anyone else had this experience in their lab or dog? She isn't overweight.
2 and a half years old with arthritis?? I guess it could be, but that seems pretty young. Likewise, anything 'serious' I doubt as well. My concern would be a pulled muscle or something, though that does seem like a long time to still be limping. I'm stumped..........
labs are prone to hip and knee issues...and these genetic issues from bad breeding usually start to show up at aroud 2 yrs old...
the vet might be able to get a good idea by manipulation but i do suggest an orthopedic vet looking at some hip and knee xrays.
it could be luxation, bad hip or arthritis (at 2 1/2 yrs old breeding ill defiatly play a big part on wether this is likely or not)
in which case glucosamine will help low grade but surgery may be in store in the future.
or it could just be a pulled muscle, in which case youll want an anti-inflamitory
I know, I think 2 1/2 seems too young as well. So there is something that can be done if it is arthritis? Would she also have arthritis in the other quarter as well? We feed her good food, keep her weight down. The only thing that is a little different is, this winter she hasn't been getting as many walks due to the weather and the snow is soooo deep here! It's possible she could have pulled a ligament with the snow being deep.
ith arthritis a goos glucosamin supliment and baby asprin as needed is usually the treatment, the glucosamin helps prevet it from gettig worse and baby aspri helps ith pain and swelling.
arthritis can effect only one leg ect...
if its hip dysplasia, itll pretty much be the same treatment as arthritis if its i early stages to try to prevent it from degrading/getting worse ith the glucosamin and the asprin for any pain.
if its a higher grade or gets worse she may eventually need the hip replaced.
it is however absolutly possible shes pulled a muscle in the deep snow in which case itll probably be a baby asprin and rest solution.
This started around a month ago, we noticed her sort of favoring that hind quarter when she would get up, but it is getting worse. It very noticeable now. She is the happiest pet I have ever owned. When she greets you, her hind end shakes back and forth so much that her entire body wiggles!!! It's not just that otter tail wagging.
