Hi all,
I'm giving my dog an herbal supplement in powder form and she dislikes the taste (i imagine it's quite bitter) so much that she won't even eat a piece of roast beef (favorite treat) with the powder rolled up in it.
Does anyone have suggestions for what i could put this powder in so that i can administer the "medicine"?
I was thinking honey perhaps?
I could put the powder in capsules but i have none, am in a place where i'd have to order them on-line and that would require days and i want to start her on the supplement now.

I don't know who much supplement you are dosing but could you put it inside of one of these pill pockets? GREENIES®*Pill Pockets® treats for dogs They are available at most vet. offices and pet stores. Or, you could make your own out of cheese slices or liverwurst. The roast beef might be coming open and allowing her to taste the powder where she might swallow something softer right down without chewing.
Another option might be to dilute the powder substance with water, then squirt down the dogs throat with an oral syringe. Personally this would be my last option if nothing else worked.
Well, maybe you could mix it in a glob of peanut butter, and get that in her mouth, and she wouldn't be able to spit it out. She's going to be really disgusted with you, though! What are you giving her? Have you made sure it's safe for dogs?
ive always had good luck with low salt organic creamy peanut butter.
about 1/2 a teaspoon smuch powder into it then gob it up. as S2C said, it sticks and becomes impossible to spit out. they will make the funny licky peanut butter on roof of mouth face for a while though. lol

Peanut butter or Pill Pockets have worked for Artie and he is a super-finicky eater and will easily spit out a pill that he detects. Peanut butter has worked 80% of the time. Pill Pockets have worked 100% of the time.
When Bandit used to take a certain medicine that came in powder form, I mixed it first into baby food, then stirred the baby food into his kibble. I'd buy those little jars and usually get 3-4 servings out of each.

I think it's true that the roast beef comes "undone" and she quickly tastes the bitter herbal powder which, btw, is safe for dogs.
I'm working with a holistic vet .... received her degree at UC Davis quite a long time ago and she also practices acupuncture and uses Chinese herbs with her 4 legged clients.
The peanut butter options seems smart but i may feel too guilty to go that route.
Or maybe i could dilute the powder with water and mix that in with the peanut butter to make it a little more palatable.
Baby food seems like a great option actually.
I use a combo of the pill pockets and peanut butter just to mix it up a little. The dogs never know where the medicine is that way. Less chances of them trying to spit up the pill or whatever I stick it in.
I use pill pockets and my 3 fight over them! I have to split one between the 2 who aren't getting the med. None of them ever spit out the pill after I switched to the pill pockets. You smoosh the top together after you put the pill inside. They come in 2 size, one for tablets and one for capsules (bigger).
