Our rescue dog, Abby, is a yellow lab mix about six years old. This summer she has started bringing us a particular type 'gift' that I really don't want. Now you can laugh if you want, but she seems to have made it her mission to find katydid/cicada shells EVERY SINGLE TIME we let her out in the back yard to do her business. She drops it into either our hand or at our feet. I cringe every time I see her coming back on to the deck and it looks like she has grown a little fuzzy mustache over her bottom lip... it's usually the legs of those darn shells sticking out of her mouth.
These things are so gross and ugly! Last year she brought us acorns. I wish she'd go back to that....Any ideas on how I might get her to stop?
Footnote: my husband and grandson think this is just too funny. Abby acts like she's done something 'grand' after she puts it in my hand. I just shudder.
Ewwww I'm so glad my dogs don't do that (knock on wood a hundred times) although one does tend to eat poo if I miss it. Sorry I don't have any advice for you. Guess it's kind of like a cat bringing you in its lizards/birds/mice etc.
P.S. I didn't know what those were, I thought shells, how bad could that be?

LOL, that's why I posted the pictures too. I'm glad our dog doesn't eat poo though. With my luck, she'd decide to bring me that too...
I remember reading or seeing somewhere that cicadas are kind of like the animal kingdom's version of chocolate chip cookies. Virtually every animal out there loves to eat them and apparently they're very high in protein. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that your dog is probably very pleased with himself/herself for deciding to bring you such a wonderful delicacy.

Oh, great... so she thinks she's sharing a treat with us. I love my dog a lot, but partaking of her generosity? I don't think so. I'll just continue to tell her thank you when she puts it in my hand. And then I'll throw it in the trash when she's not looking!
I used to have a Rottweiler who delighted in finding ant trails...ants are apparently quite nutritious as well. He'd lick them up and then come over to us with a big smile and his tongue hanging out, covered in wiggly, slimy ants.
They were the little black non-bitey ants, I guess.
I did have another dog who hunted bees in my clover-dense front yard. She'd get stung often but it never slowed her down or seemed to bother her that much.
