I've had many dogs throughout my life growing up as a child and now as an adult. I (we) would also buy them from breeders. I liked the idea of adopting, but always worried there would be underlying mental issues that would prevent me from truly bonding with him or her. I think many people have negative stereotypes of shelter dogs, but I'm writing here today because the fist dog I adopted from a shelter passed away a few hours ago from a tragic accident.
She was 10 months old when I got her in Jan 2012. She seemed sweet, but scared when I played with her at the shelter. After a couple days I decided to adopt for the first time. I can honestly say she was the sweetest dog I've ever owned. I love all my dogs past and present the same, but she truly was the most loyal dog I ever had and it has only been a year. She was also the most appreciative dog I've ever had because her life was so tough before I found her. I'm tearing up again writing this, so I'll stop. I just want to share my experience and encourage anyone looking for a dog to check their shelters first.
RIP Roxy, I love you very much and will never forget you.
So sorry for your loss and hope you can find some relief in knowing that Roxy got the chance to know love during her short life so many dogs die each day without having that chance. I have yet to adopt a shelter dog that did not develop a strong bond with me and it has always happened fast.
It seems they are with us for such a short time but each one of them enrich our lives so much. I am very sorry for your loss and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. There are many more waiting for a home and I suggest you adopt another one from the shelter.
Thank you everyone for your kind words. It's nice to know there are other dog lovers in this world. I took her to get cremated today, so I can spread her ashes in her favorite park. Best of luck to you all and thanks again : )
