So my 4 legged child is graduating from Advanced Training at PetSmart on Sunday! YAY! I want him to be a therapy dog and go to the hospital with me. I'm getting diff. answers online about spaying/neutering.....does he have to be spayed/neutered? I'm not GIVING him to someone, I was just wondering your thoughts.
Congrats on graduation! I've never seen anything about spaying or neutering being a requirement for therapy animals. It may depend on the organization you go through. My dog is currently being trained as a service dog, and will also visit classrooms with me. The main requirement is the passing of the Canine Good Citizen test. I've also seen where service dogs cannot, and therapy dogs should not be given a raw diet. Here is a link to Therapy Dogs International. Therapy Dogs International
No, it is not required. Many people with show dogs also do therapy work with their dogs, and a show dog can not be neutered.
If you watch the big Westminster show on the telly, you will hear the little personality sketches for many of the big winners will state that dog does therapy work.
We can't wait to watch Westminster! Karma is our first dog to ever notice what's on the television. She's hilarious when she sees a dog on the screen, and even funnier when she hears the soccer announcer yell "GOALLLLL!" Oops, sorry, off topic.
It's too bad about the raw feeding restrictions, though I guess I understand that. Our Jimmy had to eat a raw diet because every single commercial food and even cooked food gave him colitis attacks. He had such a mellow and friendly temperament and he was so friendly. I used to take him to my parents' nursing home in Michigan, where they welcomed all dogs. He was appropriately gentle and respectful all the time. The residents just adored him.
