This may be coming to an airport near you!

Most airports have public pet areas located near the terminals. However, those with legitimate service dogs need to have pet breaks accommodated within the terminal. Many airports do have indoor/in terminal break areas for service animals to comply with ADA and ACAA, but most are in closed areas and require the user to get an airport personnel to let them in.

California's Dept of Transportation decided that there is no reason to keep the place locked up and make the disable seek accommodation for their service animals, so they opened them up for everyone. Many major airports have looked at this and decided it makes sense so they will be creating open access in terminal pet bathrooms.

Cute idea but I know Mr. Odinator wouldn't use it.

It is silly and very inconsiderate for them to keep the areas difficult to access. That goes against ADA which is all about access. I don't understand such security measures for a simple place for dogs to do business.

That would be so useful. Airports in the US are required to have an area for service animals to use the bathroom, but it is almost always a pain to find. Our dog tells my husband if he needs to use the bathroom and will go on command so it would be a lot easier to just go into a room like the one pictured. Last time we flew with the dog it was pretty stressful and seeing a convenient indoor bathroom would probably make me cry out of relief!

It is also nice for people who travel with any dog instead of forcing them to find a place outside. Dogs have to go just like people.

Airports are exempt from several aspects of ADA. Many airports just don’t have space for special areas. Airports did respond to the needs of the disabled by building pet relief areas at or near the terminals. Some airports have received permission to established service animal relief areas in secured restricted areas of the airport. Usually these are right on the Flight Line. They can’t leave the door open for anyone to walk out and take a stroll on the runways. Others have received permission to escort a disabled person and the service animal to the outside area, and escort them back in, bypassing security. They set it up so that if a service animal needs relief, they just ask any airport or airline staff and they will be accommodated. ADA does not require airports to provide exact same services, they require an accommodation. I suspect that there are several airports with these pet bathrooms; just they opened them without fanfare. Dulles has 2 inside bathroom/relief areas. SeaTac also has an inside pet relief area for service animals - probably more.
