Do you give your pooch rawhides? I used to give my golden retriever those giant Rawhide bones from petsmart, but I hear so much bad publicity about how they can cause bowel obstructions that I decided it best to stop giving them to her. I know she misses them dearly.

Absolutely no rawhide! There is too great a risk of it causing an intestinal blockage. Plus most of it is made in China and contains arsenic (used in the processing).

There are safer and healthier alternatives.

No. Offer raw meaty bones from the butcher. Get ones that are large and will not split. Even so, my big dogs will split some into shards and I just take those away.

Yea, I heard about that option. I was told to not cook them because the bones get brittle. Hmm.

Absolutely no rawhide. Bully sticks (gross, I know) and antlers are great alternatives that are far safer.

No, no rawhide.

Learned my lesson the hard way 20 years ago. Found one of my big dogs gasping for air. Couldn't figure out what was wrong but knew he had been playing with a rawhide.- looked down his throat and saw the tip of a chunk of rawhide sticking there. Tried to get it out with my fingers- no luck. Ran and got a pair of pliers. Still too gooey & sticky for the pliers to hold it. Dog has now collapsed. Ran and got a pair of pliers with serrated edges. With that was able to pull out the rawhide. Fortunately dog was able to breathe once the rawhide was gone.

No rawhide ever again.

Certain bones like chicken do get brittle when cooked. Mine eat pork, deer, and beef. They also eat chicken and turkey. None of these are cooked. I also feed raw meat in addition to kibble. Makes for happy dogs.

Our Walter gets one pig ear per day from our neighbor but no rawhide. We gave him rawhide before but he really does not care for them much, it took him a couple years to get through one small rawhide.
