Loki was in his teens when he developed dementia. He had had declining hearing for a while, too, and his vision got really bad (cataracts) over a fairly short period of time. I am sure the impaired vision is not helping the dementia. He used to be a big cuddler, but now he gets agitated if you try to hold him. I just pet him often. He is now 15 years old. Of course, as a smaller breed his life expectancy would be longer than Deputy's.
