I've noticed a couple of times this week that my Maltipoo - approx 6 years old has squatted to pee. curious if anyone else has noticed this with their dog? I wondered if it was because we've gotten so much rain lately he wasn't comfortable standing on 3 legs in the wet grass/mud. no weird symptoms - no changes in other behaviors - maybe he's just more comfortable squatting.

Mine started squatting when he started having arthritis bad enough that he had difficulty peeing with one leg up. Not saying that is what is going on with your pup, he may just like doing it, but you might want to watch to see if there are other signs of hip or knee pain.

The male Greyhound we foster does it often. I always thought it was just him being a dog ... and like kids, who knows why they do some things? At least he doesn't say, "I dunno".

If he used to lift his leg ALL the time and now he doesn't, I'd have his back or his hips checked for pain. I suggest that you take him to the vet just to rule out either one.

My standard poodle lifts his leg when he's marking but he often squats when he has to take a "serious" pee and there's apparently nothing much interesting to mark while he's at it. My German shorthair used to do the same.

I agree with all the advice given to check his legs. My Great pyr has a bad lower leg tendon, and ever since his operation he cannot lift and a leg to pee 'Guy style.'

I'm not sure there's anything in the 'book of dog' that says a male will always hike his leg to pee, and that not doing so is cause for alarm. All of our males go both ways, and almost always squat unless they're following another one around and trying to 'cover' him (or her), or out on a walk where they want to mark.

Mention it to the vet next time you're there anyway, but I wouldn't make a special trip unless you're seeing indications of trouble in other ways. Having a difficult time getting up off the floor, taking stairs, running, etc.

Dazzle will lift his leg when there are other dogs around but at home or if we are out and Chaos is the only dog he will squat. Dash did the same, and on the flip side two of my females (Jazz and Chaos) frequently lift their leg!
