Years ago, this vet had me spend hundreds of dollars on various medications and mange testing. I asked about allergy testing, and he said that it would cost $300, so he wanted to do more mange testing and keep my dog on Prednisone, which should not be used long-term. I would have much rather spent $300 on allergy testing because I had spent that much on medications that didn't work.

When I brought it up on this forum, this vet tech berated me for not wanting to spend money to care for my dog, which is one of the most idiotic conclusions someone could come to. Because of the incompetence of that vet, not only did I waste money, but my dog continued to suffer. I found out on my own that eliminating chicken and beef from my dog's diet helped a lot. I also started bathing her more often due to my own research, which also helped.

Just because a vet is a vet doesn't mean that he or she is right. Humans go to other doctors for second opinions all the time, so we should get second opinions from vets. I've taken my dog to several other vets over the years, and none of them recommended mange testing, expensive sprays, or keeping my dog on Prednisone for life. They all told me to keep avoiding chicken and beef and to increase bathing. When my dog had a flare up last year, Apoquel for a month helped a lot; but, a bath two to four times a month usually keeps things under control.

I also wanted to add that the incompetent vet told me not to exercise my dog when she had a luxating patella. My dog's knee did not get any better, so the vet was recommending surgery. These surgeries aren't guaranteed to be successful long-term.I read research from a veterinarian, and she said that most vets do not keep up with new findings, and not exercising your dog is the worst thing you can do for a minor case of a luxating patella. So, I took her advice and started exercising my dog more so that her muscles could strengthen, and my dog's knee has been fine for the past several years.

loves2read, you might want to not give the PepcidAC within 2hours of the gabapentin as it may decrease the amount of gabapentin her body absorbs.

I knew the Pepcid AC couldn't be given within 2 hours of Ursidiol--
Normally I give the Pepcid at night about 9
The Ursidiol and 1 Gabapentin at breakfast and the 2nd Gabapentin about 6 at dinner
The Ursidiol has warning about no drugs like Pepcid w/in 2 hours--
Nothing on the Gabapentin===
Guess the Pepcid works to coat the stomach so any drug is less effective if taken too soon

(We are up late...)

It’s the magnesium that affects absorption of gabapentin. Magnesium helps sleep quality and I used to take it before bed but I’m on gabapentin for trigeminal neuralgia and take it just before bed as well.

We stopped the Gabapentin at Christmas--our dog was having some severe gastric trouble and the specialist said to stop all meds but sucralfate RX for ulcers
Just never started it back--
But thanks for the info---
Giving Ursidiol and Sucralfate or CARAFATE means getting CARAFATE on empty stomach and then 2 HR wait for breakfast and the Ursidiol w/food then...

Don't know where I heard it some time ago, but Benadryl is supposed to be effective with itching problems.
Any one know anything about this?

Bob.

Benadryl didnt help my dog's allergies but it has worked well for friends who've tried it on their dogs. It tends to make the dogs sleepy but, then, most meds that control itching do.

It didn't work on my Westie at ALL. Westie's are notorious for skin allergies and issues.

I will say that Apoquel has been a miracle for him. He was just MISERABLE every season other than the dead of winter. It is expensive but I still think it has saved me money in the long run. I was spending a fortune on steroid shots, vet visits, medications for skin infections . . and suddenly - all that has disappeared and Ringo is SO MUCH happier.
