Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs.

Cocoa mulch is sold at discount department stores and home building supply garden centers.

Information about the mulch can be found here -

Yeah, I believe that is theobromine.

We have some "midnight" mulch in our front yard. Hopefully it doesn't have cocoa.

Any of the bean is Toxic. I seen warning couple years ago and seen it listed among other things like grapes and such also. I have never seen it sold up here but wood mulch is so widely available.

Yup...have seen it in Home Depot stores. It really does smell like chocolate! I thought someone said the bag states a warning to animal owners that it is very toxic.
