This makes me absolutely sick. A firefighter (in my city) was going on vacation, and before he left, he apparently hanged his dogs from a pipe in the basement and then shot the dogs using a homemade silencer. Afterwards he disposed of the bodies in a dumpster, and bragged to fellow firefighters. He has been convicted by the courts and he is now under internal investigation by the Columbus Fire Department. However, he is STILL EMPLOYED! Give me a break!
My tax dollars help pay this psycho's salary, and the thought of him responding to an emergency at my house (or anyone else's for that matter) is terrifying. I debated posting this in the Columbus forum, but felt it was a better fit to post it here. If anyone is so inclined, please feel free to contact the CFD community relations office at 614-645-7859 and convey that is it unacceptable to continue to employ this person.
He supposedly didn't have enough money to board or care for the dogs, but he had enough money to go on vacation? If he didn't want the dogs, he could have surrendered them to the county shelter, the Humane Society, or other area rescue groups. Ugh, this story just makes me want to throw up.
That is so sick and wrong I don't have the words. He is a sadistic person and I would not want him anywhere near my home or child.
I don't buy his story, as you say, he could have surrendered them to a shelter, how about one of his good buddies at the fire department, why wouldn't one of them take care of them.
How on earth can you be convicted of a crime and still be working? Looks like common sense has gone out the window on this one.

Here's an update: The Fire Chief has recommended termination for the piece of crap firefighter who shot his dogs. Hopefully the recommendation will be followed. Thanks to anyone who called. Here's the link to the updated story. DispatchPolitics : Public may get its wish on firefighter Columbus Dispatch Politics (http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/07/10/copy/Dsantuomo.ART_ART_07-10-09_A1_VVEEC09.html?adsec=politics&sid=101 - broken link)
He deserves worse than than to be fired and get 90 days in jail. If his punishment were up to me.....well, they would probably track my IP address and arrest me for my thoughts, so I guess I'll have to settle for hoping there is a special place in hell for trash like him.

It was hard for me to decide which part appalled me the most:
1) The fact that he'd KILL his dogs rather than try to find another home for them, let them loose, or turn them over to a shelter.
2) The fact that he could afford to go on vacation, but couldn't afford to board his animals.
3) The fact that he strung them up and shot them 11 times.
4) The fact that he BRAGGED about it! (Psychopath!)
5) The fact that his penalty was so light. In my opinion, it was light.
6) The sanctimonious attitude of his lawyer.
