My mutts tie me down a lot, as they are too dysfunctional to have a neighbor come by and let them out (one bite risk, one accident risk, two very shy and frightened of strangers).
I figure the most "getting out" I'll be doing is an afternoon or evening out. More than that, and it's kennel $$ time.
But the few times I've been home without them, the house is empty. It's not really home. Having dogs has genuinely made me happy, and made connections with rescue people, shelters, and so on. They are the antidote to over-intellectualism.
Some people say, "Dogs love you unconditionally," and I must say I think my dogs would like almost anyone who feeds them and opens the door and gives treats. Some bond more than others. But I love *them* unconditionally, on their terms, as they are, as I learn to know each one. And that's worth a whole lot.
A young friend asked me, "Who's gonna marry a woman with five dogs?" and my answer was, "Who cares?" Adopting dogs is an important part of my emotional makeup, of me. So, love me, accept my dogs.
My days of traipsing around on days off to explore or stay overnight are behind me. I am thankful that I feel at home when I am home, and no longer feel that life is happening "out there" somewhere.
Dogs rule our lives & that's the way we like it. Only true dog lovers understand this.
I knew as a very young child, always having several dogs (usually4 at a time) that I never wanted children.
Just proves even a 7 year olds mind...we know what we want.
I am proid to say the only children I have ever had were/are 4 legged, hairy children. Not one regret about it, either. Hubby feels the exact same way. k:
Digs rule us...and that's the way we want it.
You crazy people and your dogs. Mine's just a dog, nothing special. What's next, putting them in strollers and feeding them high quality, grainless food?

I'll pass on the strollers, especially w/ Labs & Newfies. My Chihuahua prefers my purse. Of course they're all on grainfree, holistic & raw diets. They get nothing but the best!

If I tried to put my 80 lb retrievers in bonnets and in strollers, I think DH would have me committed
Not that it deserves an answer, but... my dogs are my family. I take care of them as they are dependent on me. I like nothing better than to see them happy, warm and fed, sleeping and relaxing in their senior years after years of bad times. It heals something in me.
If everyone paid as much attention to just one thing/cause in their lives, most causes would be forever advanced.
