Poor Duke tore his dew claw and the vet had to sedate him, cut the claw at the base and wrap it in a bandage. Now he has to wear an Elizabethan collar for 4 days and he is hating it. He was already a clutz and this is not helping lol. How can I keep him entertained? He can't chew on a bone, or play fetch, or even be outside for long (trying to keep the bandage dry and clean)

Get some Red Hot Pepper! Put that on the bandage...then take the collar off. But make sure you watch him in case the red pepper is something he likes lol As for going outside Bag the paw & tape it to top of bandage. Keep him on leash! & remove when you bring him in.

I tried the keywords alternative to e-collar to find something. Hopefully you can find what you are looking for your guy.

Forgive me, but as soon as I read this thread title, I immediately thought of Dug and the Cone of Shame. Gentle pets and healing thoughts to Duke.

The only thing you can do is make him more comfortable. I'm guessing you have the vet issued version of the collar? PetCo sells one, that is smaller, yet very effective and it is padded. Doesn't make the plastic noise every time they bang it against something. Dylan had to wear one for 2 weeks and this was the only thing that saved the poor guy.
One can also buy a very, very, very thick collar that has the same purpose and works. Only found them on-line. Forget what they are called, but they were very pricey, so I went with the padded cone instead.

When my dog had knee surgery, the vet gave her a soft elizabeth collar instead of the hard one. It kept her from biting at the cast and was much more comfortable.

Default An alternative to the collar that worked great for us!

Our dog had a tumor removed from his chest and we thought he'd have to deal with the cumbersome collar for 10 days. The vet suggested a t-shirt might do and it worked great! Of course, it depends on the personality and temperament of your dog, but I would never have thought of this as a solution for us. It worked out so well that I wanted to share it with others.
