I was just going to look up "collie nose," having heard of it for the first time today, and there it is, right on this forum along with so much other great information.
I adopted a 12-year-old (?) spaniel/collie/sheltie type mix a month ago. She has insulin-dependent diabetes and a white face. Her nose was very dry and almost excoriated. She had sort of lumps behind her nose that were covered with fur, so I thought they must be an old injury or something. But now, when she bumps into something with her nose (she's mostly blind) a bit rips off, fur and all, and looks open underneath. The tech today said it could be collie nose, and to consider alternating Neosporin and hydrocortisone topical behind her nose (and to come back if her actual nose looks infected). He also suggested the possibility of an autoimmune disease, which would be very hard to treat with steroids because it would wreak havoc on her diabetes, which is currently in good stability.
She did come from Utah, (Best Friends) and between the altitude, the incredibly dry air, and the blazing sun, she could have gotten injured that way.
I'm just going to watch and see, and put the two topicals on the lumpies behind her nose.
