Gosh i sure hope that someone can help me out here, i am at wit's end. We adopted this adorable pom that is only a year old, 2 weeks ago, he has turned out to be a doll, potty trained, listens, cute as a button, shakes your hands, gets on all 4's and turns around, Cutest little guy. But we received him with kennel cough very badly. Our much much older Pom has now gotten it, and he seems very very sick. Any suggesitons on anything we can do to help our dogs out, i am so very upset, they both sound terribly awful. Neither one wants to eat, right now and just seem to not have any energy. HELP PLEASE.

Are they on meds? If not they both need to be. Take them to your vet and have them checked. They might be dehydrated since they're not eating. When mine haven't eaten in the past I cook up some burger with rice and a slice of cheese in it.

I pull dogs all the time with KC. In 90% of the cases they don't need treatment. It's like getting the flu. It bites and you feel crappy and don't want to eat or move. You just want to lie in bed and be left alone.

However in some cases mine have wound up with pneumonia. If you think it's progressed to that, get them to your vet and get some meds. If it's still just that dry, hacking cough, don't worry too much right now. I"ve seen it run a few weeks at a time.

Up their food quality if you're able. I've found that adding in some cut up rolled Natural Balance is a good way to entice them to eat. Add canned food to their diet as well if they still don't seem to want to eat.

Either way, call your vet and give them a heads up that this is going on, just in case you do think it's getting close to the point they need to go in. At least they'll have an idea it may be coming. Other than that, don't get too worried at this point.

there are cough suppressants that your vet can give them if it is that bad. And the older ones probably need them more. It will go away in time.

How sad that the older Pom got it. I hope they both recover soon. Make sure the vet is doing all he can with medicine. I know that it hurts to cough for very long. Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone to your suggestions, we have taken them in to see the vet. They both have kennel cough very badly, and it has progressed, they are now on medication, and cough syrup which they both hate with a passion. The vet wants to see them both in 2 weeks, and at that time if they are not better, i don't know what he is going to do. The new pom, oh my gosh he is adorable, he was taught tricks by someone, he dances, turns around for you, shakes your hand, Gets on all 4's and throws his paws up, he is the cutest dang thing just wish they would both get better. How long does kennel cough last, once they are on meds. Again, thanks so much for your advice.

Please keep us posted, I am sure in a few days they will both be showing signs of improvement. Usually it is a desease that can be healed..

We had a horrible experience with KC years ago. Our dog was at a kennel mind you, boy was I unset. They never asked for prove of KC shot (well it isn't always a shot) and we didn't know any better. Now we make sure before we take Sumo to be boarded he is up to date. Other than when we are going to board him we don't pay any attention.

Good luck,

Nita

Thank you for your concern, all of you. The older one Foxy got really really bad, but he was much older then Dylan, they both had so much congestion. They are on some heavy meds right now, and believe me, getting so much better. Thanks all again.
