I'm ready to file now. It took me ~30 minutes on Freetax USA after I received my 1099's from Vanguard and my year end forms from the mortgage company.

Historically ASAP, as I'd typically expected a refund. With more complex taxes nowadays I strive for breakeven and try for later rather than sooner.

If I end up owing, there's the little loophole that lets you make last-minute contributions to an IRA. I'd rather get my full contribution for the year than let them have another $1,000-2,000.

The absolute last minute we can get away with. Usually April 15th. We always owe so we try and squeeze every last amount of time we can before sending our money to be laundered by the Fed.

You don’t owe until April 15th and you can file at any time this is just misguided

If I’m getting a refund, as soon as possible. If I owe, April 15th.

I normally do my taxes in a spreadsheet in January and transcribe the numbers to FreeFillableForms. I’m a cheap bastitch and refuse to pay the evil TurboTax cartel or use a CPA. I find that the spreadsheet method forces me to stay current on tax law.

I’m getting a refund this year so February 12 when they unlock FreeFillableForms.

I would love to file in February, as I have completed all my accounting and spreadsheets typically by February 15. I now file in late March IF it looks like everything is finalized. If not, I file on April 10.

The delivery deadlines for 1099s, particularly investments and banks, trickle in later and later every year. Used to be January 31, all of the paper forms were in hand arriving by US Mail. Since everything's gone electronic, it seems like each vendor pushes the envelope. Schwab is not sending final data out until February 19 this year. A couple of years ago I got a significantly changed 1099 in March ("revised information"). The last thing you want is to file an amended return, especially if you could have waited just a few days.

Also, the tax prep software gets revisions right up to April 15, or so it seems. Tax season, which used to be just the month of January, now really does last an entire season. Kind of depressing actually.

I have only ever filed EZ forms, so the moment I receive all my tax papers in the mail (several times they've been very, very late), I do it right away to get them off my mind. But, it's also in my nature to do everything now & not later.

Why would you ever wait to file April 15th?

Why would you ever file early if owe taxes?

For me, I am normally waiting for a K1 (partnership) so I am always filing for an extension - any tax refund is normally applied as an estimated tax payment for the next year so no rush - I am not getting anything back.

Normally in February. I would file earlier if I could, but I have to wait on my various 1099s to be prepared and sent to me.
