I have always filed tax return using paper forms by myself. But I have the impression that before long I will be forced to file it electronically. I'm curious how many people still do paper filing without hiring accountants? Thanks for taking the poll.

I use the federal and state PDF fill-in forms, print, and then mail them. I need to be able to print them out, let them set a day, and then go over them from start to finish. I have learned from many experiences that my ability to proof read depends on paper, not screen.

Both. I'm a cheapskate. Filing federal is free with Turbotax but I'm not paying $35 (per state) to file state taxes. So I print the state returns and mail them.

I would think it's not realistic to require everyone to e-file tax return within the next, say decade... since there must be many situations which can't be covered by the electronic forms and many folks have difficulties doing anything online, let alone taxes. I think it would create more problems for the IRS and state tax bureaus than paper filings do. Using tax return, I can simply enclose a paper copy of my investment transactions instead of copying it to the schedule D.

I am beginning to wonder if sometime in the future everyone will have an IRS account to go with their Social Security and Medicare accounts.

For the IRS it is about time for a taxpayer to see the IRS copy of the tax forms filed by employers, banks, financial institutions, etc. Then there would be no need to "attach" copies of W2 to the return. Then the IRS could automatically fill in the wage portion of the 1040.

If the fake news media would do some real reporting AFAIK parts of the Trump Team is working on this.

Time for the IRS to be a service to the tax payer.

Users of TurboTax can file the federal return for free. TT charges $20 to file a state return, depending on the product used. (Free filers -- those determined as low income by the IRS limits -- can file electronically for free).

I think the poll choices need to be expanded. For Federal, I file by paper at the last second when I owe, and electronically as soon as possible when I'm getting a refund. That hasn't happened since tax year 2010 that I filed in 2011. For my state, I've never gotten a refund, and most of the tax packages I've purchased charge for state electronic filing. I can't justify paying that kind of money to do the state's data entry and get them their money faster when I can spend 55 cents on a stamp and derive more benefit. My state takes over a month to process the return and cash the check. Last year, the check didn't clear until May 24. Therefore, I mail them at the last second.
