In GA, we have county boards. Our taxes are much less, but redestricting is a constant threat.
I suppose if given the choice (since we consider our local schools excellent also), we would go with the much lower tax rate.

The very best schools in NJ are run on the county level and despite having some of the most elaborate programs they keep the per pupil down by sharing services.
If I had my way we would have county wide schools and far more thematic ones.
