One time at an interview with a software firm in NJ, one of the interviewers asked me the following question:
"Would you say that you are smarter and better than the next guy?"
I told him that "I don't know about being better than the "next guy", but I'm pretty good. If you hired me, you'd be getting a very competent, thorough, hard-working person."
By the time I got to the last interviewer of the day, the HR Rep, they had an offer in hand.
I would say I'm above average in terms of intelligence. When a person stops learning, or thinks learning in is a dead end, he does a great disservice to himself (or herself).
Spoken like a well-grounded person from my home state, Illinois.
Oh, but those who actually think they are intelligent don't impress me a bit. Not the tiniest bit.
No, I'd rather listen to someone who doesn't realize how intelligent he/she really is.
Nah, self-awareness (including the self-awareness that you still have much to learn) is a valuable commodity. One can be very self-aware and retain humility, too. People who don't realize their gifts often lack self-confidence, and lack of confidence is crippling, not attractive.

It's the midwestern mentality, my upbringing, and my love for learning, not to mention the idealistic mentality I hold. Trust me, it will never be broken. It hurts me in some ways, but most of all it's been beneficial. It's just a different mind set that I acquired (and I'm glad that I acquired such a mind set) through maturation.

It's must be a chore to be arrogant and humble at the same time.
