We are looking at a possible relocation to EP. As I am reading all these threads, I keep hearing names such as Upper Valley, Westside, Diablo, etc. Are these names of suburbs or are they just ways to designate different areas of the city itself? How would I do a real estate search for nicer homes in nicer areas of the city or nice suburbs? What are these nicer areas--homes in mid 300's and decent schools? Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes those are names that indicate a certain area of ELP. Eastside, Westside, Upper Valley, Central, North East, Downtown, South Dowtown, Lower Valley, and Horizon City are the main ones that you will see on any realtor map. There are newer homes in the N.E, Westside, Upper Valley, Eastside, and Horizon City. Upper income people like to buy in the Westside or Upper Valley. The best schools in ELP are Franklin, Coronado, Chapin (i think...somebody correct me on this one).

Stay away from Diablo. My parents lived there when I was born. My parents got out of there as fast as they could.

www.ephomesearch.com or www.trulia.com or www.era.com are a few that I have been using to find a home in ELP.

Been gone since 2001 and itching to get back. What brings you to ELP if you dont mind me asking?

I would also add Montwood into this list.

Stay away from Coronado, unless you want your children to catch an STD. Coronado has the highest STD rate of any county school.

I would add Montwood and Bel Air to that list too.

We will be relocating to EP within the next two weeks. The best areas in town IMHO are on the westside. You can live in the Upper Valley, where the land is flat and relatively green, and look up into the mountains. You can live in Franklin, Coronado up in the mountains and have great panoramic views of the valley, Mexico and NM. The schools vary in quality with some areas having a great HS but poor MS etc. There are a number of private schools in town that are good and are much cheaper than the schools here in Florida. Housing is a buyers market with nice 4 or 5 BR houses on the mountain in the 300s. The farther North you go on the westside, the lees expensive the houses become. New homes in the Franklin Ridge areas are below 300k for 4/5 BR - less than $100/sq ft (nice homes with granite, built-ins). You can't find that here in FL!

Lucky you!! I think you have made a wise choice. Others may think different but when you live outside of ELP for awhile you realize how much you miss it.

You MIL? Where are you coming from?

I agree on the westside being the best. It is a small enclave of its own.
Ethic makeup is more diverse than other areas.
The vistas, arroyos(washes) and character are unmatched. The air seems to be cleaner also. Its closer to NM if you want to take short trips.
Kerns Place near UTEP is also very nice and has even more character.

Isn't Parkland high decient?? They've totally remodeled/rebuilt that School from top to bottom as it looks like a brand new High School compared to back to the late 70's and early 80's when i went to Andress High in Northeast.
