Bill Clinton praised Newt Gingrich while explaining his recent surge in the polls.
"I think he’s doing well just because he’s thinking, and people are hungry for ideas that make some sense," Clinton told NewsMax. "He's being rewarded for thinking."
Clinton continued: “For example, I watched the national security debate last night. And Newt said two things that would make an independent voter say, ‘Well, I gotta consider that.’

Clinton and Gingrich were the political Ali and Fraizer of the 1990's. They are two sides of the same coin: amoral, pompous windbag policy wonks who love to hear themselves talk.
There is a sort of wary mutual respect between them. They recognize each other as clever, devious old pols.
Here, however, Bill is just trying to bait his old friend into an ambush. He knows Newt is unelectable.

^this.
Here is someone else's comment on the subject:
"Given that Clinton wanted to run for re-election in 1996 against the Dole-Gingrich ticket -- and spent a fair amount of money linking Dole to Gingrich -- the former speaker and his supporters might consider that Clinton's latest praise may have a tinge of mischief. Clinton may well hope that Obama gets the chance to actually run against Newt."

On a stage full of mental midgets, anyone with a brain will stand out.
I don't dispute that Gingrich is a smart guy, but unfortunately for him, many of us remember his tenure as Speaker. This is how I best remember Newt.

You win the thread.
On a related note, what is with this new narrative that the GOP should pick Gingrich because he will destroy Obama in the debates? He really hasn't destroyed anyone in the Republican debates thus far.

Shhh.... don't point out what a dog of a candidate Gingrich is until after he's nominated. Then we can see Obama go to town on old bobblehead in the debates.
