At a presser this AM, Speaker Boehner was asked about Romney's remarks critical of Obama for his "open mic" moment with Russian president Medvedev. Boehner replied that it is improper to criticize the president while he is overseas, engaging in negotiations with foreign powers:

Boehner Chides Romney For Criticizing President Obama Abroad | TPM Livewire

This is clearly an embarrassing rebuke of Romney, for his reckless, amateurish comments. Romeny, who likes to call other people "lightweights", exposed himself in this incident as a foreign policy flyweight.

Boehner is a bit of a kissass. Romney was right about what he said about this, which wasn't much really. It is concerning to most people with a brain.

Watching Boehner spin and make excuses for the nut jobs in his party makes me wonder if some days, at least, he would rather have Obama and the democrats to deal with.

Oh please. Obama's pompous attitude is also improper. It's not like Romney was criticizing Obama's actual policy, just his arrogance about re-election. It really has nothing to do with foreign policy. If it's customary to not criticize the president for ANYTHING while they're overseas, that's stupid and I'm glad Romney is willing to speak what the average American is thinking rather than follow the formalities of Washington elites. Now if the custom is to not criticize the president with regards to the relevant policy being negotiated overseas, well that is understandable as to do so could mean undermining the country as a whole. But Romney didn't do that.

Just curious if the OP was upset when Bush was criticized while overseas. Or is it a one way street?

You know, I meant to say that in my post but I forgot.

Even though I disagree with Boehner on this, I respect his consistency and generally calm temperament. I think it makes him a very effective speaker even if it doesn't win him any points with his party's base.

You think Romney is a nut job? LOL...

FWIW, I find both Obama's comments and Romney's comments troubling.

Also, Boehner tweeted that he was "looking forward" to hearing what Obama meant by his comment.

Respecting your supervisor is being a kissass?

When Republians are in charge, they DEMAND you respect them.

Romney also criticized Obama's comment because he is concerned about what deals Obama might be planning on making, or considering making, with Russia if he is re-elected. I think that concern is very appropriate.

That being said, in his criticism of Obama's remark, Romney said that Russia is "our #1 geopolitical foe." I certainly don't think that is true and find that sort of rhetoric dangerous. That's probably what prompted Boehner's remarks. Romney did backtrack on that comment, but he never should have made it in the first place.
