It's because a lot of people actually believe this melodramatic and nonsensical rhetoric.

Obama warmed over Republican proposals (like health care, the bailouts, etc.) and passed them off as his own. There's nothing Marxist about it. The Republicans, realizing they were beaten at their own game, had to launch a rhetorical attack because they had nothing else to run on. Unfortunately for them, they whipped their base into an uncontrollable frenzy and it may cost them the election anyway.

I'm certain that, had Romney been elected in 2008, he would have passed, or at least tried to pass, some version of Romneycare.

Seems to me that the GOP keeps drifting further and further to the right. I think it will backfire on them, as their attitude is "no compromise" and "never surrender" seems a bit silly when it is out of step with most Americans. No one except a true believer would vote for a Palin, Perry, or Bachman, or Santorum to have national power. And no one is going to follow the lead of the Tea Party to protect tax cuts for the wealthiest while cutting the safety nets and general government services. Their idea seem more like a long antigovernment blog rant than a coherent governing policy for a multicultural country that has freedom of speech and many political views. Why has this happened? Has the GOP become the party of the angry old men who listen to Rush Limbaugh all day? I just don't see the logic of hating just about everyone except themselves at home and abroad.

Personally, I think the conservative voice is necessary to call out the left when they go too far, but the Tea Party wing has almost nothing sensible to replace it with. Why are moderates hated so much in the GOP these days? Seems like the two parties accomplished a lot more when rational, cool-headed people co-governed.
Both parties spew crap in the hope of gaining votes. Neither give a damn about what you personally believe and support.

There is no real battle between the left and the right. The true fight is between politicians and the populace they have co-opted in order to fund their further abuses while feeding their endless quest for power and profit.

If you're truly foolish enough to buy into the false left-right paradigm you deserve the rapidly upcoming abuses you've helped facilitate.

I actually don't mind him that much - but then again the REASON I don't mind him that much is BECAUSE of the very traits that's making him so unpopular with so many in the GOP (like McCain, he's a moderate). All in all it seems to me the GOP is on the tracks to self-destruction. They either need to tone down the crazy rhetoric or spin off the loonies into their own party.

I appreciate yours and Fiddlehead's comments, though I'm sure you disagree with me on whether liberalism or conservatism is better (when I say conservatism works, I certainly think it must be checked by those on the left. I don't advocate a one-ideology state any more than a one-party state). I'm really getting tired of angry conservatism though. It's getting old. We really need to have a positive message, and really I think that's something both parties should heed.

Amen. I recall back in the 80s I had a job that required a long drive through desert, and I could only get AM radio. I was amazed at how snotty the announcer and callers were, and how they sneeringly blamed all sorts of things on liberals. I pretty quickly figured out that the liberals were the same sorts of people who supported the civil rights movement, the environment, soup kitchens. In short, a lot of the things I thought were pretty good citizenship. I could not figure out how those folks were the great evil that would end our civilization. It seemed like the radio sermons my mom listened to where there were always unbelievers and reprobates following Satan. It all seemed so hateful and dishonest. It has gotten much worse over the years, and I think the partisan flamewars strike most honest people the same way, as hateful and dishonest.

Yeah, I disagree with you as to which is better - but that's fine. Liberals and Conservatives are different types of folks and both bring something to the table. Like you I think BOTH are needed. I also agree with you regarding Reagan's POSITIVE message. I didn't always agree with everything he did - and I certainly didn't like some of his appointees, but overall I think he did a terrific job as President - and despite some record LOW approval ratings during his 1st term (much lower than anything Obama has experienced) he ended up being an EXTREMELY popular President (and for good reason).

If anything, it appears that the GOP is moving to the center..... see Romney getting near the nomination
Let's not mention Santorum and Paul. Moving towards the center, the center of what, it sure ain't politically center.
The only reason the GOP is picking Romney is because he seems to be the most palatable of those running and even he loses to Obama in nationwide polls. The GOP is overdue for a reformation and after they lose again in November it may not be long in coming, at least I hope so, the GOP needs to do some major housecleaning.

Our credit rating is lower b/c we're $15 trillion in debt. I would say all that compromising is why we're in such debt.

Default Why is the GOP drifting further to the right?

To appease the mindless religo-bots they've embraced.

Because the undemocrats are drifting further to the left...and you have to keep the boat balanced so that it will not sink.
