This poll illustrates the problem conservatives have. With 3 (or more) anti-establishment Republicans against Bush, Bush wins. The cons need to start their own party if they want to see one of their favorites on a ballot.
Yes, I think there's a strong chance that 2016 will see a significant third-party challenge. Either a conservative one if Bush is the Republican nominee, or a centrist/populist one (think John Anderson or Ross Perot) if one of these three is.
It seems arbitrary to class these three as 'anti-establishment.' I don't see Cruz as positioned much different from Walker. They just have a different tone and style. Rand Paul is positioned similarly as well, except that he has a somewhat unconventional (for a conservative) take on foreign policy. But it's a take that will probably resonate with a lot of conservatives.
In a piece that claims that Paul has launched " double-barreled Internet and TV attacks" on Cruz, here's what Paul says about Cruz: Why Rand Paul is Attacking Ted Cruz
Quote:
“I didn’t find much I disagreed with,” said Paul of Cruz’s speech on Fox. “We kind of come from the same wing of the party and if you look at our voting records you’ll find that we’re very, very similar.”
As for Carson, he is not so much anti-establishment as non-establishment, only because he has never run for office before. Was Wesley Clark "anti-establishment" when he ran for the Democratic nomination? Not really. He just didn't have much of a political track record as a career military officer.
I don't see Cruz as positioned much different from Walker.
But Cruz seems to be positioning himself as more of an "outsider" candidate (never mind the fact that he was in the Senate).
In any case, the seemingly minor differences among these three candidates - who are, along with Walker, collectively attracting the most attention at the moment - will be greatly magnified once the primary season gets into full swing in about six months' time.
None of the above, Rand Paul is somewhat palatable but the other two are completely unacceptable. I would submit a blank ballot of any of them are the GOP nominee.
