because January polls for the general before the conventions don't mean jack! You should know better and Hillary only being up by 5% over Trump with 9 months to go when she has the name recognition and the most Super Pac money and the DNC supporting and protecting her shows she is in trouble.
Carter was beating Reagan by 20% in January 1980......Dukakis was beating Bush 1 by over 25% in early 1988.....Bill Clinton had NO shot of even winning the nomination of his party early 1992 let alone beat an incumbent President....the list is long.

Historically speaking, D's are foot soldiers. They'll vote for their candidate no matter who it is. That is a by-product of identity politics IMO.
The same can't be said on the R side, many will just stay home. They are much more issues driven If an R doesn't hold the base together (tea party, evangelicals, liberty, etc.) , they will lose. The only time the R candidate has won in the last 9 Prez elections as when the base came out and voted for the R candidate. When they don't an stay home -- see Dole, Bush 41 re-election, McCain, Romney -- they lose.
Or: the base simply isn't as big as you think it is. If there was a mandated vote in the US, the Democrats would wipe the floor with the GOP. The GOP vote is older, and older voters tend to.... Vote.
