One thing more obvious than anything last night was the HUGE defeat of the right wing in this country. It was rather entertaining to listen to Rush, Hannity and Boortz brooding on the radio about McCain and how the Republicans are not going to be the "party of conservatives" anymore. You could almost taste the tears as they flowed on the microphone! But lets consider the real facts:
The fact is that the Republican Party was never the "conservative party" until Ronald Reagan. Before it was the "party of Reagan" it was long the party of Rockefeller, Eisenhower, Ford, Nixon, Dole. Only upon the arrival of Reagan- who first tried to destroy the party be challenging a sitting President (Ford)- did the Republican party turn into a bastion of right wing facism. I can tell you that neither Ike nor Rockefeller would even recognize the party today. It is a party of right wing lunatics like Ann Coulter, religious nutcase zealots like Pat Robertson, Neo nazis like David Duke, war mongers, one world government types and other assorted screwballs. It has got so bad that even the traditional robber barron Republicans do not feel comfortable anymore! But the Republicans are finally taking back the party from the screwballs. The fact that John McCain is trouncing his opponets is evidence of that. Oh they throw everything that they can at him! They throw immigration, the gang of 14, the opposition to the tax giveaways to the rich and lawd knows what else at him. But he just keeps on racking up the victories!

McCain is a screwball and right wing war monger .

A vote for maclame is a vote for the democrat party.

And please read up on the "gippers" policy and what he did to this country. Reagan did more to advance the cause of socialism since Johnson.

He had me up until he started to babble about people who never represented the Republican party like David Duke, Ann Coulter.

I'm waiting for his analysis on the Democratic party no longer representing the middle of the road, and now left wing socialistic wacko's..

"Lawd"? Oops. Your mask slipped for a moment, exposing you as a member of the good old pro-slavery Democrats -- like Strom Thurmond, Robert Byrd, and all those Dixiecrats. And now your titular leader is playing the race crowd with a black man uppity enough to actually contend for the Presidency. Code Pink, Move On, Daily Kos, and the whole freak show is moving the jackass party so far to the left that they celebrate little more than victim politics, buggery, and baby-killing.

"Never represented the Republican party"? Perhaps not officially but Ann Coulter has always been a huge figure in the super-ultra-conservative republican crowd. As matter of fact, she even has a couple of fervent supporters on this forum.

The Democratic Party had historically been a center right party that became a center left party in the civil rights age. The fact is that conservatives call it "left wing socialistic" because there is no real left wing party in the country except for the Green Party that it can be compared and contrasted with.
But I can tell you that anybody in Europe or even Canada would laugh at you if you told them the U.S. Democract Party was "left wing" because they would consider our Democrat Party to be a far more conservative party in comparison to the Labour, Liberal and NDP parties.
Things over there that are taken for granted- like good public transportation and healthcare- have never even been on the radar of the Democractic Party over here until recently. Not even a "conservative" over there would dare try to eliminate such things.
So I would argue that the Democrats do in fact represent more the middle of the road. The things that most Democrats propose are in fact very modest compared to other industrialized nations and they mostly serve the middle class and working class. While the Democrats propose things like somewhat limited health care (SCHIP) and additional Pell Grant money, they are not proposing what could be considered "radical" things like massive expansion of the welfare state. The last "radical" thing a Democrat did was in 1964 with Medicare (LBJ) which is a form of national health insurance.
