The hippie movement died out, but there are still quite a few beatniks around.

PEMCO Wally, We're a Lot Like You, a Little Different

Besides people like that who never left the 60's or 70's, there are quite a few neo-hippies as well in Eugene. Most "hippie" traits are blended by varying degrees into many Eugene residents.

Nuevo Hippies are mostly Wannabe's. Old Hippies, were Hippies, and are still around. Being a Hippie denotes being a Hippie. Negitive or positive depends on who you are.

Most real Eugenians, even if they don't seem like it, will have something hippie about them, at least moreso than the average person. Something in their past, or a hobby, or like you learn they run a booth selling beeswax products at the country fair or something. There is a reason people choose to live in Eugene, after all, and those that don't fit the mold will be the ones living in the bland suburban parts of town. Most of the rest of the city has a faint hippie vibe, as do its people.

Good description of Eugene. Now cross the river to Springfield, and you better take your chew with you.

Hippie was a derogatory term invented by the intellectual hip to describe clueless kids who weren't really hip, they just wanted to dress up and party.

Not much has changed.

Yes, and your point is ..... The term is pretty accurate other than many are old, skinny, and gray now.
