Well, Hamburg is a major train node, so you might go to Bremen, Lüneburg/Hannover, or even Berlin on high speed trains.
But I think you will be quite tired from work and listening to German, anyway So you will eventually end up not doing very much in your spare time Frankly, if I had so little time I would probably just go for a walk and explore the city I am in, maybe drop in at a local museum, eat at a good restaurant, rent a bike, etc. But I would refrain from trying to see as much as possible, tourist stress is not much fun.
Very good points, Thank you! I think the museum/memorial at Laboe and Peenemunde are probably going be my must see sites. A night or 2 in Lubeck and I'll just wing it the rest of the time enjoying the surroundings and food!. The folks at MAK say they have a full schedule planned includeing those 2 places so I'll see what they have laid on.....
