Sources in Moscow report the military’s loss of confidence in the Commander-in-Chief has not been seen in public since President Boris Yeltsin countermanded orders for Russian military aid to Serbia under NATO bombing between March and June 1999, dismissing Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov on the US demand.

“[Putin] has blundered with Erdogan, with Netanyahu,” commented one Moscow source. “In making all his concessions, one after another, Putin has been watched very carefully. His civilian advisors – [Foreign Policy Advisor Yury] Ushakov in particular – are making mistakes. They expect[ed] the show of strength in Syria would have changed US and European attitudes, and they would listen. They didn’t. So the Russian military have reminded Putin – we told you so.”

On Monday morning, following an unprecedented Sunday briefing at the Defence Ministry, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced measures which Putin has repeatedly dismissed over many years. The new Russian war policy puts a stop to Putin’s assurances to the US, the European NATO powers and Israel that he was resisting the recommendations of his General Staff. Putin’s resistance ended on Monday morning. Shoigu and the Stavka ended it.

Shoigu’s measures were announced (right) between 11 and 12 noon on Monday, and broadcast on the state media within minutes. In effect, Shoigu declared a 400-kilometre no-fly zone for all foreign aircraft over Syria or the sea and land approaches to Syria from Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. Also excluded are aircraft from the US base at Al-Tanf, inside Syria, and the British airbase at Akrotiri, Cyprus.

The way Konashenkov "drilled" the whole detailed analysis of attack during the Russian MOD briefing, he left little space for Putin to maneuver.

Shoigu too went public to send the message across, so yes, Putin had to oblige this time around.

I found an interesting fact. Information about S-300 is only on English Wikipedia:

"Initial private assessments of American military officials said the crash was caused by a S-200 missile that overshot its target drone—which had been destroyed successfully by an S-300 fired at the same time—and instead of self-destructing, locked on the passenger plane about 250 kilometres (160 mi) further away and detonated 15 metres (50 ft) over the plane."

But I found information about the S-300 in Russian sources. Ukrainians came up with this version in early 2010.

Spoiler

Russian Wikipedia has information: The Russian Black Sea Fleet was not equipped with long-range anti-aircraft missile systems in these military exercises.

So, English Wikipedia contains incorrect information. Ukrainian Internet troops don't slumber.

In reality, this is mistake of Ukrainian air defense system operator. Incorrect target designation and uncontrolled flight.

This will be used in case of a threat to Russian military.

I do not understand, the sky is closed for flights or not.
Israel maneuvered the IL-20 to set up the attack.

"Tel Aviv misinformed Russia’s Hmaymeem coordination centre, claiming that the Israeli attack would come from the east. The Russian command instructed the IL-20 to move west and land at the airport to avoid being caught in a crossfire. But the Israeli F-16 jets arrived from the west and not the east, leading to the downing of the IL-20 and the death of the 15 Russian servicemen."

You're ascribing a conspiracy theorist website with the "dreams of Washington". Don't be surprised if reality disappoints you later on.

The conspiracy theorist also wants to eat, wants to have his website to continue to successfully exist. So that all in order ))
So, if conspiracy theorists say to write a story, for example, about Russian teaspoons and saucers, he will write about them, no doubt. And it will be terrible secrets, but in line with what is necessary to the Washington Department of truth.

It's not really a conspiracy theory. It's been an open secret that there were military factions in both the US and Russia that wanted to put up no-fly zones. If you haven't known about the topic, then you weren't really following the conflict or following it with blinders on. In the US, they persistently lobbied for it through the media.

I hope Putin is beginning to understand the situation. Russia can do nothing right in the eyes of the powers that be in the west. Trying to appease street thugs will get you nowhere. It just makes you a target.

I think some bloody noses are in order.

Perhaps you wish I tire of constantly pointing out the obvious truth, but alas. It was no secret at all the no-fly zones exist in Syria, no side wants its side being overflown by aircraft from the other side... this agreement has been in force since Turkey shot down that Russian aircraft. No Russian fighters over US controlled areas, no American planes over Russian controlled. None of this is related to Israel bombing what it feels like doing.
