I would like to know what merican's consider socialism, what Canadians consider socialism...
I've been told only by Americans that Canada is a socialist country because we have Universal Healthcare and other social programs.
Yourself posted that the French were tired of socialism, as if France were a socialist country.
Socialism, to Canadians, and the rest of the world is exactly what the definition states. Oxford.
"A political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole." In other words, the opposite of free enterprise where the government owns everything.
Canada, France etc, are not that. Canada is a parliamentary democracy, with a free market.
Some countries can be called Social Democratic, which again is NOT socialism.
That is why people laugh when Americans started shouting that Obama wanted to turn the US into a socialist country by just introducing UHC, that the rest of the FREE world has.

Yeah - and to change the subject, Republican Americans bristle at the thought of starting "socialist health care" as if it were something new -- not even realizing that their own Veterans Administration, Department of Defense, (and prisons, and Indian reservations), already constitute the world's largest government-run health systems.
Yeah, it's folks who yell "Keep your government hands off my Medicare!"

The insurance lobby is very powerful. They have been quite successful in keeping Americans biased against UHC.
Not just on these forums, but in real life, I have had conversations with Americans who believe that in Canada,
1 ) It takes years to see a doctor.
2) People die waiting for care
3) You are told which doctor you can go to,
4) They think doctors are government employees
5) We don't have modern medicine and our technology in the medical field is 50 years old.
6) Hospitals look like Soviet Bunkers
7) Rely on the US if we want care.
All this is laughable to Canadians, let alone frustrating, since those bits of propaganda is part of what is holding the US back. If people really understood what a tailor-made for the USA UHC could look like, they'd fight for it.
Protests are normal, but burning cars is just stupid. Idk why French ppl enjoy burning random cars on the street. Imagine if it was your car?
Btw it's also dangerous to brush this series of massive protests in one lighthearted brush (it's what French people do etc.). People are protesting because they are really angry. Politicians come and go and nothing has changed for the better (though that's the case in most developed countries).

lived in L.A for 8 years and have never encountered such americans, and i travelled all over the US. The girl i dated was from south carolina and her family had the opposite view of the Canadian health system
It may not be as a whole but healthcare there is a socialist system. You're point is invalid.
