Try doing some warm-up-type exercises for your shoulders, legs and hips before you stretch - even if it is yoga-based.
Good for you! My only advice is to be careful and go slowly. If you feel any discomfort...stop.

Within various fitness programs, flexibility is key to being able to lift in a physiologically-safe manner. Shoulder, lower back, and hip flexibility tends to be ignored a lot; but isn't a problem if you do not engage in activity that requires a full range of motion in these areas. Some people work more at flexibility, and some have a body structure which allows for more flexibility. It would all depend on what your fitness goals are. If you can run a 4:00 mile, but can't touch your toes, it might not matter that much to you.

With flexibility comes potential problems, however. Flexibility without joint strength could cause long-term pain and injury. When I see people who have never done strength training in their shoulders jump right into doing a kipping pullup, I cringe.

Yoga and pilates have been best for me for increasing flexibility, balance, and core strength.
