22 miles from New Salem IL to Springfield IL. Did it in reverse a couple years later.
I guess I should clarify... walked from the New Salem Historic Settlement in Petersburg to Springfield (or from Springfield to Petersburg... done both).

40 miles over 3 days on the Pacific Crest Trail. Heavy pack. Unpleasant experience especially after my feet turned into hamburger, but the views were awesome.

It's been many years, but I once walked with my brother from Tahoe City, CA to the state line
near the Cal Neva Lodge, about 14 miles, and back in one day. So 28 miles.
16 miles. In a blizzard. I had to abandon my car and walk home with three teenagers. We weren't dressed for it, but it turns out you don't need to be bundled up when you're walking 16 miles. It took us about 6 hours to get home.
I've certainly walked over a dozen of miles in one day...probably approaching a couple dozen in some, like when I was in New York or Spain. However, this walking was over the course of a day, and interrupted.
I have myself down as walking 8 miles on rural roads around the Fourth of July 2011. In terms of the farthest distance I've ever hiked, that has to be a weak 8 miles on a day hike between the Ely's Peak trailhead and Spirit Mountain, right here in Duluth (much of the city is forest and woodland) in 2006. I weighed about 250 lbs then, too.
Like some others have posted, my record was while backpacking. A buddy and I did 33 miles in one day (about 18 hours of hiking time), with a 40 lb pack on. The clencher was this entire time was above 10,000 ft, so it was a long day of very heavy breathing, ahahhaa.
It is my opinion that backpacking in varied terrain has to be one of the single best cardio workouts that exist.
And from where to where? I'd say about 10 km for me, from my home to the beach, it took about 2 hours. One day I have to walk into town, 14 km away.
1045 miles in a bit over 5 months in 1980 after high school. i still have pictures and items from that walk. i walked from Lehigh Acres florida where i lived to relatives in Toledo, Ohio.
2 miles to school and then another 2 miles back to home. I walked this everyday and this was back in high school 6 years ago.
