Many self proclaimed fitness experts say it's hard or unwise to bulk and cut at the same time, or even that it is impossible. I don't. It's the healthiest and safest long term solution.

But, what if you want to do it short term? Well, I tried it out.

Some background information.... I work anywhere from 65-85hours per week, carrying heavy loads and gear.

Strength: I have a four day split, Upper body/lower body 1/2. During the past month, I was splitting my workouts during two parts of the day. I lifted core lifts in the morning (squat, deadlift, bench) for the respective day, then I finished off with 'accessory' work later on. That is defined as rows, mil press, etc. I warmed up, always, with box jumps, approx. 45-52" at a height of 65". Lots of stretching, foam rolling, icing of the muscles and joints.

Conditioning: Box jump variations, on 'off days' I did hill sprints and short runs.

Diet: I stopped eating breakfast, I started taking a lot of amino acids...morning, before/after workouts and when I wasn't eating. I only ate from 11-12 to bedtime. I no longer took a post workout shake, instead it was 15g of amino acids. Then, two hours later 15g of amino acids. Diet consisted mainly of chicken, veg, fruit.

Other factors: Maintained anywhere from 5-8 hours of sleep. Instead of waking up at 10-12pm on my off days (That's what 75hr work weeks do), I started waking up at 630am.

Start [27 Feb 2012]:
14.8% BF, 21.3 lb
85.2% LM, 122.9 lb
Total, 144.2
RMR [Sedentary/Very Active]: 1892/3075

End [30 March 2012]:
10.4% BF, 14.7 lb
89.6%, 127.2
Total, 141.9
RMR [Sedentary/Very Active]: 1943/3157

Results from BODPOD.

That's a pretty dramatic change in body composition for five days.

good job at cutting bodyfat while maintaining most of your size. im not really sure you can call it a bulk though if you end up weighing less than you started.

Man, that is impressive, especially given your line of work. I don't know how you did all that and were able to recover between sessions.

I knew it was a typo...

That's impressive. Clean bulking requires some pretty serious attention to detail and to keep your weight that consistent means you nailed it.

Well, you'd consider bulking more lean mass than original... not overall body weight.

Great work, but bulking is building size and growing muscles. Most people put on quite a bit of fat while bulking and then cut to show off those new muscles.

I think however you proved you can gain more lean muscle while also cutting. This is basically what I am doing. What I regret however is not taking the same measurments you did. I am going by the mirror and scale right now. I was too afraid to look at bf vs lm.

Again very awesome results, especially in such a short time.

Well let me point out there are two types of ways to grow muscle.

Sacroplasmic and microfibiler. Sacroplasmic is the muscle on the outter layer, does not correlate with strength. Microfibiler are the inner strands, correlates with strength.

People consider bulking increasing lean mass (muscle) and fat (Which you mean by building size [i assume you mean fat] and growing muscles). So, please don't try and teach me anything about 'bulking'.

I consider bulking increasing lean mass (muscle).. since I have gained strength, appear bigger (due to low BF %), and as an added benefit, I've lost bf %.

It's impossible for you to gauge your BF and lean mass, without proper measurements or standards.
