Unless specific and extensive cardiac stress testing is done, the doctors are running on mostly statistics when they say, "you're healthy."

But when a person consistently measures heart rate over time through daily activities and regular exercise, the heart rate reveals even relatively minute changes that a cursory physical will not reveal.

From the Center for Disease Control website.
Men:
Height (inches): 69.3
Weight (pounds): 195.5
Waist circumference (inches): 39.7

Women:
Height (inches): 63.8
Weight (pounds): 166.2
Waist circumference (inches): 37.5

How sad!!! In my circle of friends and family the I would say the averages are

men: 5'11" 185lbs
women: 5'5" 140lbs

Maybe some of you are more muscular that I am, but I'm trying to figure out how someone can be 3 inches shorter than me, 10 lbs heavier, and wear the same size I do; or be the same height, weigh 20 lbs more, and wear the same size I do.

When your weight category reaches the upper "normal" limits, obesity isn't too far away....better to keep the weight well below "large frame" territory.
You're right--140 would be in the large frame category but it's nowhere near obesity for a 5'4" woman. the borderline for obesity is closer to 175 for that ht.

Body composition is much more important than just weight alone. I think clothes sizes and measuring tape measurements are much better indicators

Muscle weighs more than fat and people's bodies are all different shape. Ever see the movie Despicable Me? I have seen bodies the same shape as Gru's. Women with skinny skinny legs and huge upper bodies. They can wear a size 6 on the bottom and an 2XL on top. Someone with the same height and weight could be a size 10 all over. Same again, size 14 on the bottom and small up top. Different shapes.

But we are ignoring something important. 140 is not the average weight. The average woman in the world is 140 pound. However, the average American woman is 166 pounds
FASTSTATS - Body Measurements

166 pound is clearly overweight if they don't have an abnormal amount of muscle.
That seems low for someone at 5'4" since 120 is at the top of my range and I'm 5'1".

166 for American women seems more correct. 140 is within everyone's range for correct weight.

Although the original poster said that the article was talking about women in general. I see a lot of people here referncing American women and making generalizations as to the average and height and weight. I would like to know what exactly constitutes an American woman?

Never trust clothing sizes! They are being altered by fashion companies to make consumers feel less fat. Marilyn Monroe was a size 8 in 1950s. Today that's a 2. In a few years it'll be a 1.

to remove all the debate on what is normal, right, etc, the best way to know where you land, regardless of bone structure, height, weight, etc. is:

Get a good body fat measurement, that removes all doubt, and even better is a DEXA scan and then you will also know lean body mass as well, even down to how much in each leg and your arms, they are the best.
