I started at the start and did not stop till I got to the finish. I was pretty fit and had been running halfs fairly often. I made it to about 30km pretty well but the last 12 were really hard. The beer someone put in my hand as I crossed the finish was wonderful.
I wanted to run on the treadmill because I believe that running will help me lose weight.
Run if you want to, but there are lots of ways to exercise that are easier on your joints. Mix up the jogging with walking at a steep incline and if the gym has an elliptical or stepper, use those too.
Exercise is important, but weight loss is about 85% diet.

I lost 40 pounds in 2011 just changing my diet. Exercise is important, but altering your diet is what is going to make the most difference.

I got a nice treadmill a few years back and ended up needing surgery on my knee because I got a little overzealous. You DO have to consider your joints! I liked doing the different incline programs but I hurt myself pretty badly. I was told to get rid of the treadmill and get an elliptical, or at least skip the incline and just walk level.
My joints failed me more than my treadmill motor ever did- it's still chugging along. Hopefully you drop the pounds quickly and the weight limit won't be a concern at all!
If you're using the workout room at the apartment complex and they have an elliptical also, why don't you try it? It's a pretty good workout and a lot easier on the knees.
I wouldn't worry about it. I think companies are pretty conservative about these things. My desk chair has a limit of 220 or 225, can't remember exactly what, and I weighed around 225 using it every day for years, then even got up to 230 for a couple months before I dropped down well below the weight limit. It's not a treadmill though.
You can use the treadmill without running. Moving 3-4 mph is better than not moving at all.
